Hello Derridando,
I have had a Nokia car kit for over 2 years, it works with my wifes 5110, my 6110, 6210 & lately my 6310 (Think i must like Nokia  ).
When I upgraded from 6210 to 6310, the only difference I found between the phones was that the 63 does not switch off with the ignition like the 62 did.
From my experience, your most likely cause for the phone not registering that it is in a car kit, is poor connections on the phone or on the holder. Try cleaning the contacts (brass pins in the bottom of your holder). The best & longest lasting cure I have found is by using the finest grade of sand paper you can get (1000 will do) to Lightly clean the terminals using a front to back motion! you only need a couple of passes with the paper- don?t go mad! I find that whatever it is gumming up the terminals seems to grow back. Sometimes the phone works, but no-one can hear me, or even the same as you- not register as being in the car kit. This gumming up occurs on the contacts on the bottom of the phone & also on the battery terminals -phone cuts out, V annoying.
Lastly, when I got the phone from Orange: the shop people said that if the phone did not work with the car kit, I would need to get the phone "flashed". I presume that it is an upgrade/reset to your phone setup. This usually can not be done in a shop, but needs to be sent off.
Try cleaning the contacts first before visiting your phone shop.
hope this works

I recon you must have the standard Nokia kit if you can use all these phones in it, leave off the sandpaper, touch of meths or similar will do.
The 6310/6310i will not work in the (merc) kit without an upgrade, same thing with 6150/6210 a while back. also check software in phone is late as poss ( press *#0000#
Upgrade should be around £250 all in (not much labour involved, just swapping ECU)

Hello All,
Just to clarify, my kit is not Mercedes. This dose not surprise me that you need a different control unit -nice rip off!
Try researching a standard nokia kit for just the controller -I presume the connections are the same. Try http://www.accessories-for-phones.co.uk/carkits.shtml they sell a complete geniune kit for £90! :D (I just found them!).
My kit is NOKIA CARK 91 hands free Kit you would get after market fitted for any car. It came with a tax disc holder aerial (no holes!), and I fitted it myself to my 300E and my former mount. I also found a great UK web site that does proper brackets for mounting the cradle -no holes in the dash! Have not got details with me but will post if required + if I find the receit for mine!
Why change phone! Well I was surprised how good the 6310 (fast menus more voice commands etc.) over the 6210 (too many software gremlins) & Orange paid me 1p to take it!
The concerns about sandpaper are noted (yes the contacts are very small +thin), but this tip was passed on by a close friend in the industry. Love to see you messing about with meths whilst driving! -you only need a small square of sand paper kept handy to cure any on-the-road problems such as mentioned before 8) .
