Intermittent Indicator failure/95 C180

Can anyone please help with the following: My 1995 C180 (202 series), has developed an intermittent indicator fault. Sometimes it won?t indicate left, sometimes right and often not at all. In conjunction and no doubt related, the hazard flashers don?t work at these times. Where do I need to start looking?

First check the fuse it might be a dirty conection.
If it's not that a faulty flasher unit is next on the list

Sounds like the multi function relay which is behind the fuse box on the drivers side(black box about the same size as 20 cigs), this relay controls the flashers/ hazards and wipers
