Seen a car in belfast I am interested in, no idea how it works though, if it has MOT and tax, can I just go see it, insure it and put it on the ferry and drive home?
Is that, yes, there is a lot more to it, or yes, you can just insure it and drive it home...
Belfast is part of the UK, so just insure it and drive it home.
When I was with Ford Motor Company on ex daily rental disposals in the 80's, we used to put bomb damaged cars into Carryduff Car Auctions in Northern Ireland. There weren't many of them but they used to have special Auctions for them !! Just a useless piece of information for you

Cars in N Ireland are, Uk road tax, and DVLA registered.
I bought a car last year from N Ireland,
Prior to going or booking anything I did a full RAC check including HPI, and Insurance register checks to ensure car was genuine.
All was in order
The rest was very easy I booked flight with easy jet to Belfast ( took a pal with me) one way,
I had an arranged hire car from Belfast airport for one days hire, we drove out to persons house, inspected the car, all was as described.
I asked seller for photo I'd as proof of seller, also council tax details to prove his address was correct and same as on DVLA logbook.
Then after everything checked out I made payment by bank transfer and got him to sign a document of release which was corroborated by checking his photo ID and inc details of it in the document of release ( just in case he reported it to Police after I had left his home and said it had been stolen).
Do Not take Cash or pay in cash.
As my pal had trade plates he drove the car with me following behind in hire car.
We returned hire car, then had a night in Belfast and caught early morning ferry to Liverpool the next day.
Everything went smoothly I even retained the Irish registration no.
Re MOT you have to contact DVSA to inform them if a registration number plate change has taken place.
