I think everyone is talking Tesla as that's about the only one you can realistically use as an only car, at a push.

If someone wants a second car that is purely for short trips to/from work/shops. Then something like a Leaf is ideal. But try driving from London to Birmingham in a Leaf and it's going to take you best part of a full day.

At least in a Tesla/ICE you can do it in a few hours with no stopping.

But that's just it TC... most people don't need to drive more than 80-100 miles at a stretch. Ever. Most people- remember A & B segment here- drive to work and back, do the shopping etc. And remember that 250 odd miles is coming out for series production in the next 2 years.

It'll never be a one size fits all solution; I'm leaning towards the future being hover- vehicles myself like what Luke Skywalker had.

Has any body (as opposed to anybody!) ever done a full analysis of the environmental costs of producing an electric vehicle as opposed to a normally fuelled vehicle - including ongoing costs eg how the electricity used to charge it is produced. Also disposal costs?

Oh yes, required before such vehicle types can be sold. You'll need to go digging but such reports are out there, start with the SMMT.

I think the Tesla S outsells most other brands of that size and cost i.e. BMW 7 series, Jaguar XJ etc,

I think the Tesla S outsells most other brands of that size and cost i.e. BMW 7 series, Jaguar XJ etc,

Jag XJ global sales 2016: 5470
BMW 7-series ditto: 18,903
BMW i8 ditto: 3650
Tesla Model S ditto: 44.590

However that is not accurate as the Model S is not an XJ but an XF competitor.

Jaguar XF ditto: 23,081

and the remainder of that competitor basket:

Audi A6 & derivatives ditto: 114,015
BMW 5 series ditto: 121,306
MB E-class ditto: 131,293
Volvo V70/ XC70 ditto: 54,682

so the reality is that the Model S sits at no. 6 out of a basket of 12 competitors, it is at the bottom end of the volume exponential curve as the next car to it is the Ghibli on about 18k.

I would quite happily drive a Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous Speed option but at £140k it will have to wait a while

I've been in a 90D with ludicrous mode. It should be renamed F**king HELL mode. I've never experienced anything like it and I've been in some powerful cars.

Musk also announced today that version HW2 of Autopilot mode is about to be released. That would be news in itself.

But it also enables Ludicrous+ mode.....!

Because ludicrous isn't fast enough! :D
