It makes me laugh that loads of diesel owners here are winging about "new car will cause more pollution" but thing is no one is forcing people to sell their diesel cars to go for a petrol one, these new tax are effecting new diesel cars registers from April 2017, "so all ya can just chill ya....."

And it won't burn more in the plannet to make a petrol powered car because all car models are the same, its just different engine...

That's my two cent spent for the day...

Now where my coffee? :)

Peace out

It's like recycling glass, completely pointless as sand is not in short supply and it takes more energy is to recycle old glass than it does to make new.
Truly efficient recycling of glass would mean refilling the same bottle over and over...... like we used to back in the day.

Ok. Typical figure for car production in raw materials is 5555kW.hr. That is just to process the materials into the shape of a car. Of that, 50% is steel sheet, 19% cast steel, and 8% non ferrous other metals. So 77% of the energy content of manufacture is contained within metal.

What do you think the difference is in terms of energy requirements to recycle scrap metal, versus mining it? It's something like 5% of the energy cost of mining, without accounting for the massive overheads and labour cost differentials between scrap recyc and mining...

Glass by the way for cars is always 100% virgin, there is no refrains content except for the cullet from the float line that is recycled in line. Glass accounts for 3% of the energy content of a car's manufacture requirement.

In terms of running that car for 30 years, the saving is 5555kW.h- (new car efficiency- old car efficiency). I suspect the answer will be nett the energy cost of manufacture of the car as 55mpg is bang on the money.

None of any of that has to do with pollution, just energy efficiency.

Think you missed the point, we discussed that bit in bold because to create and manufacture a new car from fresh it's more polluting than keeping an older car on the road... ;)

...Because regardless of fuel type, Diesel or Petrol, it'll take effort and resources to make a new car, whereas an old one is already made and on the road... :)

Sleep beckons, too much Tea today I think...

On a more personal note, the torque of a Diesel is suited to relaxed drivers like myself, a petrol will never match that relaxed driving style

Go for a '55, you'll get torque for a relaxed driving style when you want, and petrol style oomph when you need it.

Yeah, I got another nippy- bum moment in the 500 this morning, dry road & no ice... fancied just hoofing it, span the rear wheels at 45-50mph...

Yeah I know, it's the cold rubber, it doesn't have much grip under 7C. I always go a bit gingerly this time of year, or take the audi (4WD)

Haha if only my friend, few more years and I'll hopefully have an old E55, a 55 is my end game hopefully.

I'm on my third V8, and second V6 now I come to think of it.

I'm on my 5th V8, and 6th V6 (and I've had a 4.3 litre straight 6 as well if that counts?)

V8s were:
Audi A8 4.2 QS
Range Rover Vogue 3.9 EFi
Land Rover FC101 Ambulance
Land Rover FC101 GS (told other half it was a V8, mid engined 4WD convertible :) - and got away with it!)
R129 500SL

V6s were:
Mk2 Capri 3L GT
Mazda Xedos 6 2.0SE
Mercedes C240 (1998 W202 Esprit)
Mercedes C240 (1999 W202 Elegance)
Toyota LandCruiser Colorado 3.4
Mercedes E240 (2001 S210 Avantgarde)

Well lets say I was on a very good IT contract.....

The Audi, Rangey and FC101 Ambulance were all concurrent. Two were toys and the other was my daily.

Ah hah, hah ha ha haaaaaaah...

V6 no.1: 1986 Pontiac Firebird. <awful, dreadful>
V8 no.1: 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am <much better car>

Both of the above bought while I lived in Floh'da enjoying the redneck lifestyle, hoooo boy!

V8 no.2: 1995 Ford Mustang GT <dreadful rubbish>

bought in 2005, sold in 2006. That was a horrid car.

V8 no.3: CL500
V6 no.2: E320

One bought end of '15, the other one late '16.

I always said you were a brave man using a Landy FC as a daily drive ;)

Let me guess, the Forward Control was not the daily driver. Great vehicle though.
