R129 under bonnet insulation

Hi all

Mine has given up the ghost, crumbled and collapsed. Tired of having bit's drop on me when I'm checking the oil or whatever, I've pulled the rementents off. It came off pretty easily actually, just a couple of bit's left to scrape, a job for when the weather gets a little warmer.

Has anyone tried the SL shop version?

I can't imagine this item is much more from an MB dealer?

Any other suppliers or generic solutions used? I'm guessing it'll provide heat and noise insulation, mine is only a 320 so under bonnet temperatures never get all that high, does leaving it off make much difference?

That looks quite good to me, i replaced mine a few years ago, got it off e-bay for about £80, but that looks better.

Just remember to use the Mercedes Glue to fix the new one on to the bonnet Or ask other members what they have used.

It's a cr*p job anyway, but worthwhile, and has to be done.

the SL shop used to sell them for £83 back in august 2016. then price rise to £93. i am sure they then priced it over a hundred pounds last week.
seems they have gone back down in price.

Very easy. Good bit of kit from the SL shop. I did it - this is what I posted back in May 2015

"Not a 280SL but an 320SL (sorry). I bought a new insulation pad from the SL Store, together with replacement clips and spray on adhesive.

The old one came off pretty easily (spread an old sheet over the engine to collect the debris) and then used a stiff broom and blunt paint scraper to clean off as much as possible of the old glue and residue.

Sprayed the bonnet and new pad with adhesive, left it to become tacky, then hung it on the new clips at the front of the bonnet and then smoothed it down (like hanging wallpaper). All good and seems to be stuck like sh*t to the proverbial blanket.

The only PIA was removing the old clips, which was what I expected and why I bought new ones.

sorry i have not got round to sorting mine out yet. as my CL 55K is a demanding Queen, so money gets thrown on her first

I think I'll order one and give it a go. My pad collapsed so I removed it, I think I'm noticing more engine noise now!

I'm thinking of a different technique. Dangle the pad from the bonnet using the press rivets, spray with adhesive, raise to vertical position then smooth down.

From when I had Range Rovers and had to glue the headlining back in I was never particularly impressed with spray adhesive as I found it didn't last long before it started sagging again.
I'd be more inclined to use a brush on product.

55 degrees wasn't an issue for a Range Rover headlining!

Took a couple of days to arrive from Germany, comes complete with clips, looks okay quality.

A 500 ml tin of trim fix was £6.95 so all set to do the job. Cleaned all the crumbly stuff off, combination of scraper, an electric drill with a polishing pad and a dremel in the corners.

Some of the old hard glue is still on, the pad will cover it.

So stripped off old insulation and left with this.

Combination of scraper, drill and dremel with polishing pads left this.

Dangle pad from push rivets, spray with adhesive (500ml was about right)

Wait 10mins and smooth down.

Sorry about the rubbish photos, important to work quickly before Mrs F discovers where her curtains are.
