I suspect the built in kit is 800-850/900 /1800mhz.

I do suspect that the inbuilt antenna cannot do 3g frequncies properly as the car would show signal with the SAP cradle when on 3g, but would be very unreliable on it.

That said, it would show "3g" on the dash so I wonder. I have ordered this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262112202058?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

and will experiment.

Mine has the original Nokia cradle with external antenna jack (FME) so whatever I used would need to tap into that...

Your system has the benefit of giving signal to all passengers, rather than just one phone!

Additionally, my hacked together thing may not work at all.

A GPRS ant should provide a GPRS bubble for all users, no?

In yours yes, in mine no, its a very short range antenna, so the phone would have to be pressed against it.

Also GPRS etc is a standard that runs on top of the frequency. So as long as the base frequencies are reproduced/supported then any connectivity standards that are based on them will work.

Ok. I thought I'd break into the Nokia cradle and this is what I found...

Pulling the old FME jack out and putting the thing back together looks like this.

Not sure that's an FME Male connector though.

This is FME Male -

FME Female:

Might be easier to cut the end off and solder on something compatible.

That is rather larger than the photo would have implied!

I thought something about 3" across...... nope! No wonder it came in such a big box! 19mm clearance hole required too!

Right, all the sources I have show the 6310, 6210, 6110 and 6150 (which I have... a Nokia model specific to the S-klasse only naturally!) as having an FME female connector. So whatever antenna I buy must have an FME male.
