Nicola has gone rather quiet, for her.

Good, she has no mandate for another referendum she clearly told the electorate that before they elected her.

If the SNP feel so strongly on the subject resign en masse and put it to the electorate.

"Another wrote alongside a £20 donation: “Make June the end of May!”"

To be fair that's quite funny.

Not sure it will work though, no matter what candidates they field I know which way I'm voting.

And we can all play that game. I shall be urging all and sundry to vote.

Good for you... You obviously approve the hypocrisy of a sitting PM working out the likelihood of a landslide win and calling a general election - even though her own party brought in the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act which gave a specific date for general elections to take place every five years and prevent PMs seizing unfair opportunities (like now) to sideline the opposition. Err... at present that'll be the opposition she says is trying to frustrate her efforts despite not losing one single vote!

btw:
If you dislike any of the things that are going at present, remember that once you voter her in she will have carte blanche for five years!

Behave. Noone ever voted for a party, or DIDN'T vote for a party, based on EVERYTHING that party stood for. I will vote Tory because the alternative is Corbyn's brand of left-wing politics.

I actually thought the Conservative/Liberal alliance was the best govt we've had in a long while and would have been happy for that to continue. The LDs tamed the worst excesses of the tories and the tories kept the LDs heads out of the clouds.

Dave, you seem a well balanced kind of guy and I think I'll get a balanced reply. The above post makes me wonder what you consider a better alternative , leadership wise, to the current PM and party?

We all know why Mrs May is calling this election at this time, and she has every right to incidentally. Opposing MP's are backing the election, so if you don't want Teresa May to be our leader, who is seriously capable?
Remember, you will be voting for a party, not the leader.
Comrade Corbyn? His party are in freefall along with his political career. I expect Labour to be in the wilderness for many years until they change leader and policies.
That leaves UKIP and the Lib Dems. Seriously?

Maybe I should run for PM?

But in all seriousness unless you get someone who forms a party (and quickly). Then takes the best bits of all the different party manifestos and makes it their manifesto. Then there isn't any other credible alternative out there.

We need a Montgomery Brewster.

Actually you're voting for an individual MP, not a party. Unless you want our friend Mr. Wales' Proportional Representation system ;)

I don't object to the Tories selecting Theresa Maybe and I'm not stupid enough to even look at Corbyn and the others are just odd ineffective numbers - as I said before the Lib Dems have another five years of wandering in the wilderness before they get another look in. But in any case my political leanings have always been capitalistic although I am presently very uncomfortable with the way that many of the most vulnerable have been targetted under the umbrella of "work not benefits" - I gave a prime example from the front page of our local paper.

Like government in general from what they had on offer May also for them was probably the best of a lousy choice. It's irrelevant but if I had had carte blanche to pick a PM instead of Cameron, I would probably have gone for Osborne - history will show he was probably the best chancellor for a long time. Of the current lot, frankly none of them inspire me and (you may have noticed) Theresa May is what I've described - a hypocrite who said one thing and now says the opposite so she was either very economical with the truth then or she is now. And having denied that she would call an election on the record no less than five times and bearing in mind that her party brought in the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act to give a specific date for general elections to take place every five years and prevent PMs seizing unfair opportunities (like now) to sideline the opposition.

So my anger is directed at the dishonorable way in which it's been done - and the lie is proven by the fact that Theresa May has not lost one vote since becoming PM. That suggests to me that we'll be told publicly that Brexit is going great (about five times I suppose!) before she comes out with the hard facts. Due to Corbyn mostly there is no effective opposition and when this has happened before the governing party at such times has usually become its own opposition but instead the PM has gone for the all encompassing wipeout. I find it rather strange that almost everyone on this forum seems to worship our PM and finds every argument to support whatever she does even when it's plainly wrong!

Yes it would. And dangerous because it specifically insulates the party from the electorate; there is no way for a constituent to address concerns to his or her local MP because the MPs are designated and allotted by the party, not voted in by a majority of constituents. Thus the allegiance of the MP is only to the party, not the constituents, and the constituents' demands become unaddressable. No such thing as rebel backbenchers as they work directly and only for the party.

It's the sort of system that appeals to those who know they know best, and everyone else who doesn't agree must be stupid, should just shut up and do as they're told. Or, just want power.
