I would avoid the dealership route unless you enjoy open wallet surgery

Ask the forum here for recommendations of local independent MB garages in your area. That will halve the labour cost of your repair.

I would do the above.

Other than I might pay a mobile engineer to come out, (if its not drivable) but only IF he could gurantee to do a full 'STAR INITIAL TEST' AND PRINT IT, AND WAS ABLE TO INTEROGATE THE VARIOUS FAILED MODULES. Circa £50-60 I hear.

If you had that "report" that might indicate your problem zone, and if it anything obvious and simple, then mend it yourself.
This would not be wasted money because you can take this to the Indy if you cant fix it ... who would have done this anyway.
I personallly wouldnt let a mobile guy mend my car, but would send it to a recommended Indy.

From what you are saying ... I think you will be gutted if you go the main Dealer route.

The first thing I was told when I got my i980 was, NEVER EVER start the car with it plugged in. The chance of it affecting something is infinitesimal but it's still there.

No body said anything about that to me with e iCarsoft MBII!
Yes you can run the ODBC check withnthe car off.
But it needs to be on the look at all the good "Benz" stuff.

Are they very different, or do you just look at the 980 withthe ign in pos.2?

Not tried to see if that actually lets you look at everything.

I was strongly warned ... never to plug the unit in, or remove the OBD plug, with the car engine or even the ignition on.
It must be off, KLG plug out and key out!

Advice from Phil. Start the car first then plug it in.

Thanks

Oh dear, dont like that advice.
The manaual on the MBII is EXTREMELY EXPLICIT ABOUT NOT PLUGGING IT IN WITH A RUNNING OR EVEN IGN ON CAR.

Yet IMO Phil is one of the best Mechanics around.
So this dilemnia scares me.

Is the MBII different to then i980? ....
Or is this advice regarding STAR.

I noticed the good proper MB Mobilo technician always turned the car off before plugging in or out the star connector.

So, was the underlying fault ever identified? Is the car running now?
