W208 Auto gearbox Dipstick

Hi Everyone
I want to change the Filter and the ATF in my Clk I have noticed that you can get a Dipstick from ebay but there seems to be different sizes any idea's on which one is right for my car which is a 2002 230 CLK

Search for 722.6 dipstick , they are always too long for the dipstick tube

or as malcolm says (rip) a piece of flexible curtain wire and put a mark 7cms from the tip

Personally, I would ignore the curtain wire tip.
I have tried it, and trying to see the exact level is a real pain, and subject to error.

The correct gearbox dipstick, on which the level is clearly read, is only a few pounds, so why skimp and risk fudging the job for so little?

I use a piece of clear tubing. Push it to the bottom, put your thumb over the open end and pull it back out. Gives a very clear reading.

If you are just changing the sump pan then that only holds 3.8L.

If you are bleeding the TC, then it takes 6.5. Just measure the oil you drain from the cooler pipe and replace the same amount down through the dipstick tube.

Of course having the dipstick is preferable.

Hi Steve,

So these service kits you see on Ebay for the 722.6 5 speed auto, why do they supply 8 litres of oil? Are they just a rip off.

I'm thinking of doing mine before winter.

Is it acceptable to just drain the sump, not change the filter and then refill with new fluid? Just thinking that might be easier for me that taking off the sump pan also.... are the sump bolts a really high torque?

Is vacuum extraction through the dipstick tube possible, as I have one of those Pela extractors?

Hi Rich.

1. Dont know about the service kits... I don't buy them from eBay personally, all my gearbox stuff is supplied by MB.
2. If you just drain the sump without removal you will only drain about 2L in total...pointeless if you ask me. If you are confident in your ability and have the right tools its not a hard job, even for a novice.
3. I wouldn't vac extract a gearbox sump, you have to drain the sump to change the filter anyway...
4. The bolt torque for the sump bolts is 8nm and 25nm for the sump bung.

I have regularly used my Pela to suction out ATF from the dipstick tube , but I have only done it when the filter has been recently changed and I haven't done a full flush of the TC and hoses . I recently did the filter change myself which went ok and I may suction out 3.5 litres in a few months and replace it with some fresh stuff . I use Fuchs atf4134 from eBay which is a pretty good price and is 236.14 spec

Hot after 20 min drive , level surface , engine running , gearbox in Park .

Will have to change my connector plug also as I have some transmission oil under my passenger carpet. Transmission ECU looks fairly dry still, only a bit on the cables.
