Hello, 07 reg E280 auto 95000 mls, 2 x MB and 8 x MB specialist ( Macleods of Hull ) stamps in the book, Shell Helux oil and in excellent condition. I've had an intermittent engine light problem and 2 indies gave me a code reading of P0022 incorrect intake position and P0025 incorrect exhaust position and/or possible balancer shaft problem. I'm told there are 4 sensors and wondered if they were all interchangeable. 1 indie suggested doing all 4 for £280 and the other said swap them to the other bank and if the problem follows then its def the sensor at fault. My opinion is replace the faulty one at £25 + labour and see what happens. Yuotube shows the sensors to be very accessible and I'm capable of doing such a job myself as long as there's no diagnostic checks involved after fitting. I've had the car since January and its happened 4 times (1) lasted 4 days (2) lasted 2 days (3) lasted 5 miles (4) lasted 2 miles and each time went off on its own and not been on for about 4 weeks. Thank you Jim

When you say Indy , do you mean a Mercedes expert with STAR computer ??

Have you googled M272 engine issues?

Make sure you're sitting down before you do.....
I've Googled M272 engine issues and here are the results. M272 engines with improved parts have engine serial numbers higher than.....2729 30 468993. My engine serial no. is.....2729 30 654316. Would you agree that's good news. Hope so. Thanks for all your help. It amazes me the high level of knowledge all you enthusiasts have and willingly share it. Jim

Engine light came back on yesterday so it's time to go back to the Indy and get a new sensor and see what happens. I may even go to the main dealer and put it on myself .

Fitted a Bosch sensor yesterday (£50), started the engine and the EML went straight off. Success.......but short lived as it came back on again today. Can anyone tell me if the fault code has to be erased from the ECU after a sensor is fitted. Thx

since the EML went off when you started it the error code must have gone away as conditions triggering the code were no longer present however since it came back it seems the sensor was not at fault, if the same code has come again then your engine could still be suffering the common m272 issues even if the serial number is not included in the list. you can try scanning and clearing the code again if it still comes up its not the sensor that was bad.

It's been to the Indy today and he thinks its a timing issue rather than sensors so he's swapped the actuators from the left bank to the right and vice versa and I'm now monitoring it to see if the EML comes back on and then have it checked and hope it's the right bank.

a number of things could be happening

the sensors were a bit flaky and or designed to fail, many have given exactly the issues you have...
I believe all the sensors now are of a later design/part number...
the cam chain can stretch and cause your issues, usually at high mileage (yours is close enough)
or worse the sprockets the chain runs on are made of jelly and disappear... the engine numbers affected in the pdf is more a guide than they really knew which cars were specifically affected...
hard use, poor oil or lack of servicing can create the fault on engines allegedly in the unaffected range
and many well maintained and sensibly driven in the affected range can go past 120k without issue

the sensors will likely pack up or play up so swapping them out is simple and "cheap"... if you need the engine out to do the balance shaft and sprockets you'll see why I said they are cheap, and the new sensors are part of the job when done correctly anyway

The Indy thinks a possible 10% chance of chain/sprocket wear/damage as it has the newer upgraded parts so it's fingers crossed and hope if the EML comes back on its on the other bank, if not the car will go the journey. Thanks for all the input.

UPDATE. I sold the car yesterday. Since the last visit to the Indy I've had no issues with it but overall too risky to take a chance on a major mechanical failure. Thanks for all your input.
