All went well. Its filthy from the 3hr wet motorway drive home. My nephew is gonna clean it on Sunday. So pics to come...!

It looks like the boot seals need re-doing so I need to find somebody to help me do that.

I am in Colchester, if you know anybody nearby.

Ta.
Good news

Have they perished or just need feeding, plenty of good rubber feeds out there,I use Gummi and it stays moist for ever

Cheers

I used Gummi on mine too, ace stuff but expensive (not as bad as Krytox though). Is it just boot or the roof etc? There is a sticky on doing the entire seal upgrade put together by Malcolm (RIP) who did literally dozens of these

I BOUGHT IT!

Congratulations, looks very similar to mine, same year, same wheels. Mine has done 70,000 miles now, I have owned it for 5 and a half years and still love it. It stays inside mostly at this time of year, although I have taken it to work today as the Missus is using the beemer.

Welcome to the club. You will enjoy your car.

Depending on your skill level and availability of tools/space I have found the R230 to be an ok car to work on. So far I have carried out a few major jobs on my car including Boot seals, Front struts(replaced with Arnold’s rebuilt items) and a Front valve block rebuild. There is plenty of info online but if you need any advise get in touch.

My skill levels are basic. And we just converted the garage into an office. I've been quite busy in the last week (and have easily added 500 miles onto the clock so it's now over 61k. It's a beast of a car which makes my BMW 330i seem like a steam-roller.

Anyway. More importantly. Today I had to drive to Broadstairs. And *had* to take a picture. Here it is with, as the young like to say: #nofilter

It is a nice looking car, I still can't help giving mine that backwards glance every time I park it.

R230 SL500 - oh yeah!
That is a sweet looking car and a great picture of it. The others are right - should have a picture with the roof down in that location!

I personally wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole, so much to go wrong that eventually does costing a ridiculous amount of money.

Cars of this statue should not go wrong in the way that this particular model does and Mercedes should accept some liability holding their hands up and discounting some of the parts that they made so poorly......I love my job but hate giving people continuous bad news regarding ridiculous expensive faults.
ABC struts, pumps, pipes rusting, valve units, instrument cluster back lighting, water ingress, oil dumps leaking, Caliper pad plate swelling, PSE pumps, rear dams, glove boxes, rattling cats, rear brake shoes cracking, keyless go door handles, just to name a very few of the issues.

My advise to anyone is not to buy one blind, get a specialist to inspect it thoroughly and be very careful with the cheaper ones.

I’d personally go for an SL65 but with a 40k minimun yah it is alot of money for all these above faults to go wrong at some point in he future. But least you’ll have some fun with the v12 twin turbo before you get there.

It’s bad news but hey it’s good to bear it in mind.

Whist I can’t disagree with a lot of what you’ve said (I’ve been victim believe me), it’s a bit tight to burst the poor chap’s bubble when he’s just got the car!

Yes i do, I’m actually down in Harlow on Saturday then heading into central London.

I now live up in Lincoln but still travel and stay down in London every other week for a few days so I pick up a lot of jobs on the way up and down aswell.

John honesty is the best policy

I took these things out of plastic doing PDIs and am still working on them every day.

In my experience it’s best to know what’s to come before you get suckered in too deep.

Plus there’s areas on these cars where money is best spent otherwise you kind of get carried away doing unnecessary jobs.

I’d rather give the advise before that happens.
