I do buy some randoms stuff, but by wife will really give me an odd look with this one! :)

I also have the worst luck ever, asked a few indies, they have both said, "no, I have never had the injector pintle cap fall into the intake."

My luck!!

I think the V12's just bake everything under the bonnet until its brittle. At least I know for next time, inlet manifold off, then remove the rail.
You’re not alone Alex (at least not in BMW land...;))

I'd be very worried leaving it especially as you have turbos. Turbos don't often like solid food....

I would try it with the piston at BDC so that its a strait down reach to try and grab it.

One of the suggestions on that BMW thread makes good sense. The suggested a wooden dowel with blutack on the end. I'd substitute a wire coathanger. Untwist the join and use that to hold the blutack. The twists will help hold the blutack on and the wire provides enough flex to manoeuvre the sticky end.
Warm the blutack to make it sticky.

With the piston halfway down you should be able to get enough room to get around the piston.

Yip saw that and it looked the better suggestion- had to laugh though as he couldn’t remember what blu tak was called!! All good if it’s dry in there...

I'd prefer a Straw or plastic tube connected to a vacuum cleaner.

Difficult to pick up an o ring though...

Try it on objects before going in, I can't see it having any problem holding it by air pulling in around it.

If the tube used is big enough for the object to get sucked in, just stretch a stocking over the end of the vacuum pipe to filter it so the object(s) can be seen. That's the big end of the hose, not over the straw or narrow tube.

Once you introduce oil (EP90 was mentioned) you change the dynamics of the problem.
No amount of blutack will then stick to the piece, and the piece itself will also be difficult to detach from surrounding surfaces due to the oil causing it to adhere more strongly.

Keeping things dry gives you a wider scope for removing it.

A Dyson with a hose attached seems the best way.

I have been going in through the spark plug hole only. Not enough space through the inlet valve. Inlet manifold is already off as most of the pintles and O rings fell off upon removal of the rail, but most of them sat on closed inlet valve so managed to retrieve with a hoover and pipe.

I cant see that well through the plug holes that's part of the issue.

If you have s borescope can you tie it to a coat hanger and still get it down the plug hole?
