And as for comparing it with a S Class being ridiculous
I dont think so.

Of course it is, the S is at least double the price so it should be at least twice as nice, totally different sectors and markets

Hmmm do you not think you could get a pretty nice ultra low mileage SL500 for £40,000!
Thanks but, I think I could get an exceedingly nice one!

So someone who buys a 4x4 / SUV would consider an SL, totally different cars.

Lets take me for example, I drive a C class, the GLC is the 4x4 variant of that albeit newer, so would I consider an SL if i were going to buy a GLC because they are the same price, in a word NO:

The SL is about as much use as a Chocolate Tea Pot for me, it only seats 2 for a start and I could go on about ABC etc!!! BUT the GLC is a practical family car and is aimed at that market, I have 2 kids so would look at one, infact i have driven a couple of them and they are nice cars BUT for me it would have to be a 350d in AMG Line spec or 43AMG.

Have you checked if it has "Hill Hold" function with a firm press of the foot brake?????

Seems this thread is just an excuse to rant about a "Lower level" car than you "rarely" drive due to a litany of problems, you could have googled it and got several videos on how to!!!!!

So here you go

I'm struggling to comprehend if it was actually the start/stop. In 2 miles it operated 40 times, or was it 4 miles and 40 times?? In 2 miles the system wouldn't have been hot enough to operate, it has to reach a temp sufficient to restart. Plus the battery needs to have sufficient energy to start each time and 40 starts in such a short time window is beyond belief.

Perhaps the brake pedal wasn't held, or the 'hold' position reached in order to operate the stop/start. Was the bright green light with the 'E' in the binnacle on all the time to indicate SS was available?

My W221 S350L had SS, as does my GLE350. Neither exhibited the symptoms described in over 100k miles. If the engine/gearbox were not hot, or the battery condition insufficient the SS would not work. 2 miles or 4 miles in SS traffic would not have seen the SS system operate that number of times as the battery level would be too low.

Pilot dead, pilot error

I’m wondering if the 40 times is an exaggeration...

I'm wondering if the whole thing is an exaggeration, no offence to Sub but the title says it all really.
He hates it, that doesn't mean its a bad car, others might love it.

Could you get a new one for £40k?

Erm... no.

It’s a C Class. That’s C/D segment market placement, which puts it at Evoque, Freelander, Q5 level. S Class is Premium E Large, and towards the top end of it price wise. The two cars here just do not compare- they literally have no valid comparison points.

I was just thinking about if one was spending £40K.
I have had a couple of loaners an E 350 coupe ... thought it was a super car vfm
And a C Class Coupe 200? again a vey nice car.

In fairness to this one
I like the led lights
i like the illuminated door cills
I really like the the silent gliding mirrors when they shut and open.

Plus and Minus’s
There seem to be too many little buttons cramed together for a drivers car , but the understand the younger set will no doubt love them.

The wuality of the screen is a lot nicer more Apple retina style. But very busy for driving but again the the you ger set will lap up the quantity of stuff it does.

After driving it a very short distance it seems ro use a lot of petrol.
Used 1/12 of a tank in a few miles or the hite company who now seem obsessed on the fuel level probably scammed me by filling it till it just lit the last led segment. To look full.

Or the car power to weight ratio is grossly underpowered, its a lot of body to push along.

True, and infairness I am used to SLs and CLs ... so good handling.

But there are things I feel are just not a proper Mercedes. And I wouldnt dream of buying one. Where as that E350 Coupe was beautiful, drove perfectly for a sort of saloon, and such a good looking car. Even ten C Class Coupe was a very nice car both worthy of the badge.

My only experience of 4x4s was one ML55 and a Toyota Land-cruiser hired on holiday. So not a fair comparison.

Anyway thats what I think.

Having had a longer drive, I utterly hate this implementation of stop start, and the seats are definitely atrocious.
And for me its severely underpowered, whereas the CClass Coupe was a tad underpowered but it masked it well.

The R231 SL400 and SL500 do not have ABC or their associated suspension issues. They do however have ECO stop/start but if you have the Smartroof gadget fitted you can use it to turn off the Eco by default on start up if you get fed up using the on/off button.

Yes you can buy a good R231 under £40k (not bad for a £100k car new)so if you do not require 4 seats or a load lugger and you want a real head turning Mercedes that out performs 90% of production cars on the road, gives a V8 experience and returns 30mpg on a journey and roof down experience it is hard to beat!

The difference between an E350 coupe and a C200 is a whole lotta performance, two cylinders and different fuel.

C200:
Petrol
181bhp/ 300Nm
1505kg

E350 coupe:
Diesel
254bhp/ 620Nm
1890kg

Your GLC by the way:
Diesel
167bhp/ 400Nm
1845kg

That isn’t grossly underpowered. It’s just underpowered in comparison to what you’re used to. What you have is the very bottom of the range; a GLC350 would have the same figures as the E350 but be 45kg lighter.

I have to say the start/stop on mine is pretty seemeless without shuddering but would not do as many start/stops as op has reported.

I only use start stop if in the urban environment which is something that rarely happens I mostly use park and ride.

Having said the above I start car switch off ‘Eco’ button and put the car into sport mode which makes far a better drive on my mostly B road journeys.

When I go on longer trips particularly France I do put the auto box into ‘Eco’ as it’s mostly driving without start stop.

Just my best estimate.
Moving forward 4 feet at a time. Also getting into a parking bay, go forward stop e gine cuts, go back stop engine cuts!
Every time I stopped the engine cut.

On another shortish drive that evening, with headlights on, the equivalent distance no traffic, the engine cut out maybe 5 times??

Exactly Robin
I had an E350 Coupe ( lovely car very pretty btw .. my thoughts were I wish they had used that design team in the latest SL.) I guess by its age it must have had start stop ... but I didnt even notice it.
OK it wasnt mine so I wasnt thinking about it.

@Submariner1 without trying to sounds like an arse, will probably come across as such, why not just press a button to turn off the ECO as soon as you start the car and call it quits?

I do that with mine and so do others with theirs.

Couldnt find an “echo” button,

Europcar deliberately remove the manuals “because people steal them”!
The couldnt tell me what the blue square with the capital P in white was. Some times its on sometimes its off. Personally not bothered what it is.

Found out its a button with a red A on it and a 3/4 circling arrow.
Very easy when you know!
Simples start car switch it off.

The Drive improved 500% with that off, no slipping back. :):):)
As a matter of fairness review wise, Super Sport plus does cut out a lot of the floaty wandering feel.

Park Assyst or Active Park Assyst depending on version. As you drive below 20mph the car searches for spaces that it can park in. Usually on the nearside, but if on roads where armco is in place it picks up the gaps on the offside.

See this:
even a blonde bird can use it ;);)
