I used to have access to a car lift and did all my own servicing. I no longer have this facility, so is it possible/easy to change the lubricants on only drive on ramps? 2005 Eclass Estate.

Lots of us on here change the oils using a pump and don't even have to bend down. Lots of posts about it on here, have a browse.:)

I marvel at how easy my engine oil and filter changes have become since investing in a Pela a few years ago. Wonderfully easy and clean.

Or if you're tight, like me, a Lidl pump, though you need to have an empty oil container at hand.:D

Do you get the feeling that these guys can't bend down anymore?

The Pela has really changed my approach to oil changes. Trouble is, I now do them more frequently, so the on cost needs to be taken into account!

When changing the gearbox oil one should change the filter, gasket and give the sump a cleans
You can't do this without accessing the sump so how is the Pela handy for this.

Just saying mind :)... Pela of cousrse only useful for engine oil.

Sure it is possible, I've done it on wooden blocks and axle stands. Not as easy as on a lift, but definitely doable. As you can see from the posts here, engine oil change's are now mainly done by suction pumps. The transmission and differential of course has to be done from underneath the vehicle.

Thats how I do mine, by removing the gearbox sump, along with many others on here (5g box).

But after you've had the sump off and renewed the filter and replenished the same amount of atf that you drained off, there is still the torque convertor and the cooler radiator with its pipework to drain.

There is often no drain plug on the torque convertor, and it's a right pain to completely drain the cooler radiator and its pipework. That's where the Pela pump helps. Using the pump is a cleaner way to complete an atf change, by running the car then removing, say, 2 or 3 litres, then replacing it, then repeating the exercise. This helps to renew the atf throughout the box - including the torque convertor and the atf cooler and pipework.

yes you can do it , on the floor with ramps . put the front on ramps and jack up the rear on stands so the cars level. if you are outside, pick day thats not windy or you will get all the dust blowing up around the guts of the box! I did mine as stated up against the side of a garage ( it wouldnt go in) very still day get the box sump off drop the filter replace it wash out the sump quick and wack it back no problem. watch your oil level in the box , temp / dip stick! engine and diff easy!

I managed to do the transmission on mine while it was on stands and blocks, was my first time ever changing the trans oil on a Merc, and for sure only for the help and advice I got here on the forum ( Thank you all :) ) it would have been problematic. Now that I have crossed the bridge of the 1st change, will not be afraid when ever I have to do it again. One thing that I would do for the next change is to get a banjo bolt fitting, with a connecter for a plastic hose to drain the oil from the return coolant pipe. It definitely makes the job cleaner and easier. I think that there is a purpose built fitting available for this, maybe some one here knows where it can be got? For me, I managed to put a length of hose on the bolt with a jubilee clip, it worked, but still leaked a bit of fluid as the existing banjo bolt is a bit short. It definitely makes the job a lot easier.

But you can't replace the filter this way.

Search here on the forum for 722.6 transmission oil change or alternatively, Google Mercedes Benz 722.6 transmission oil change it will direct you to several sites, with step by step instructions.
Good Luck

Read my post again:

Yes umbelcumbuz, you are right about sump drain and filter replacement. That was why my input was to detail draining the TC, coolant pipes and Rad...like I said, with the proper banjo bolt connector and tube, it's simple. Drain 2 litres, refill 2 litres, until the new red coloured fluid replaces all the black stuff !!!! :):)
