As with any car, don't buy it if you could not afford to repair it. I could get a replacement engine for my common C220CDI for 1500 quid, which I could afford, but I wouldn't want to have to stump up 7k for a C63 engine.

That said, it is true that you wouldn't even buy a Lexus if you just went on internet reviews. What is the real percentage of failures of this particular engine?

If you really like the car and are prepared to spend for peace of mind, get the bolts done anyway.

Caveat emptor and all that.

plan would have been to just get the headstuds done. prices seem to be aorund £1500 ish which i could budget for. but imo you don't spend 20k on a car and expect to have to pay another 7k in short order. assuming thats worst case of course.
A very sensible approach. Exactly what I would be doing, except for the fact I'm decades too old for a C63.:(

And the reason he passed the car up is ... “Well looks like its not happening, not getting the offers i want for my current car. shame really :(
So please get your facts right.

Yes, I did read that. I don't think your posts allayed any of his fears beforehand though.

£12k to repair or £25k for a new engine ridiculous, Divide them by 4 and you are close

Just drooling over the Clio V6s on that wessex cars site. Yes I know there are more exotic cars on there but I love those bonkers Clios.

How the designers got those past the bean counters I'll never know.

Actually, a new M156 engine is probably a fair bit more than £25k if the price I read of £44k for a brand new M113K engine is to be believed. Maybe more silly figures being bandied around and thought as fact?

So basically write-off every AMG car if it needs a new engine!!!!!

I think its about 2% of the engines inside the range of affected serial numbers. Cam buckets wear too, but both not hugely common in our climate, hotter countries are affected more.

Absolutely, swap the bolts if you are concerned and call it a day IMO.

Any AMG built in any appreciable numbers is easy to find an engine, 55K engines can be had for 1500-2000, M156 63 engines probably not that far away from those numbers.

The M275 V12 in 6.0L form is quite difficult to find under 8-10k so hopefully I wont have to look for one!
