I had a price a while ago to take a W204 265bhp to 310bhp/700nm for £300. There is no rolling road as part of the file upload. Is it always better to spend more and take the car to a tuner and have the rolling road time?

A rolling road will tend to get more power, but on a diesel I would always go for the "box tune" as its just going to be more boost/fuel and there won't be any more to be had from tuning it on the rolling road. If you want to get before/after numbers just arrange it with your local rolling road.

Is the box tune something that a mobile tuner would do, I believe they will take out ECU to do this?

A box tune just refers to a standard tune for that car/engine.

IE. a tuner has obtained that vehicle. Remapped it and made all the tweaks they need and then dial it back 5% or so. This is now a safe tune for that engine.

Other tuners will then re-apply these same changes to other cars without the need for testing etc.

Whether they need to remove the ECU and "bench tune" is dependent on whether the tuning software they use has the ability read/write the ECU via the OBD or whether the ECU needs to be put into boot mode and the written straight to the memory chip on board.

The 350CDi needs the ECU removing to map it
