Good afternoon,

I have the software to perform a forced DPF regen. I plan to do it this week as I suspect it may need doing (8,000 miles of inner town driving)

Has anyone here done it? My software suggests the car has to be driven whilst doing it, continuously for between 15-40 minutes at a constant rev range.

I was hoping to do it on driveway.

Anyone have any experience with forced regens?

Thanks

The regen will only run when withing a certain speed, rev range so 3rd at 4-5k rpm will actually cancel out the regen. Fine for an Italian tune up on none dpf cars but not if you need to do the regen where your car actually dumps fuel into the exhaust to burn off the particles it has trapped

My E350CDI has done three regents in 7 years, two at the end of a 90 minute drive.
The other in 50 mph roadworks on the M6, after a 4 hour drive back from Scotland.

@sonic and probably even many more that you haven’t noticed as well. Mine used to do a regen every 250-300 miles without a fail.

The regen is very noticeable revs increase by at least 500 RPM, & the exhaust note changes.
I very rarely drive less that 10 miles on a journey, & do very little town driving.

While that is the case, if you’re sat on the motorway crusing with the music on and a regen starts and runs for its 10-15 mins, you are not likely to notice much as it will stay in 7th gear anyway.

As Sonic, the regen is very noticeable when pootling about his description is spot and frequency. I do like the raspier exhaust note wish it was a permanent feature

mine seems to be doing them every 500 miles at the moment, I noticed it doing the last one at 70mph the reves increased by about 250 and it dropped into 6th rather than staying in 7th which I was quite surprised about

Does something on the dash indicate that a regen is happening?

Regen is nothing to do with the rev range. Even a forced one.

It is down to the exhaust gasses being up to a hot enough temperature to burn off the waste on the DPF. Your car will regen at 70mph in 6th at 1900rpm just as happily as it will in 4th at 4krpm.

If the car needs a regen it will try to do it itself, even round town. There is no warning on the dash for this like in some other makes. The only way I ever knew my C350 and current E250 are doing a regen was the slightly higher than normal revs at idle (about 1k vs the normal 650-700 ish) and the excess heat if I got out the car.

If you want your car to do a regen then as has been mentioned. Go for a drive on the motorway/A-Road for about 45mins. 20 mins will not suffice as the car takes at least 20mins to do the regen and it has to get up to temp first. Coolant temp is not an indicator either.

Drive the car for about 10-15mins and then pull over but don't switch off. If your idle speed is higher than normal (circa 1Krpm) then the car is attempting to conduct the regen. Drive off again and stay driving for around 25mins. Pull over again and check the idle. If its still circa 1Krpm then drive again as the regen is still happening. If possible do not interupt it as it can take a while before the car will try to regen again. Another indicator is you may not be able to select 7th gear.

All a software forced regen does is alter the fuelling to try and get the exhaust gas up to temp quicker.

You will not notice 90% of regens happening and they will be happening within every 500 miles or the DPF will be blocked. Every so often you may get signs of one happening, like a slight raise in revs if sat at traffic lights, a slight smell or a drop in the instant economy readings. Most of the time you won't be able to spot it though which is why @sonic you may believe they haven't been happening, bit they have.

If you have done 8,00o miles and not had any issues then the regen process is working as it should and there is no need to do any forces regen.

Interestingly today driving the 65 miles to Nottingham, the car did a regen.
I heard the change in exhaust note, & the increase in engine revs. Lasted about 20 minutes.

It will, if you drive up a motorway for 20 mins you have to drive back for 20 mins, job done ;)
