May be worth reading up on what rights you have to reject the car due to its oil consumption issues/defects before you meet with MB?

Firstival they should not charge you for any work done on the car if it is under warranty. So when you will be speaking to them just push on them. Car is under warranty and it is not your responsibility to take care of anything that will happen to the car. They sold the car as Aprroved Used car so it is their problem to make sure that you as a client will be satisfied with your purchase. Do not let them to s*** you. Also I think you are allowed for a 30 day exchange after you will buy the car as Approved Used from the Mercedes? Am I right about it or something has change about it?

Dear All,

LostKiwi, I believe that the £80 fee is for 30 mins of the Technicians time, enough time to place a diagnostics computer on the car and in this case determine why the radio lost " Smooth Radio” DAB transmission at 3pm on 21 May 10 miles south of Bicester on the A34?? If the technician finds a fault then the £80 fee is canceled.

I spoke with the Service Manager this morning, he has promised me that the car will be checked for Radio reception faults, the fuel gauge issue and the oil consumption issue . This will be done free of charge, as I have only had the car 4 weeks. I was also informed and I am hesitant to put this in writing, Mercedes do not accept that a car is at fault unless the oil consumption is greater than 1 liter in 600 miles. That's about a sump full every 300 miles? I am informed that BMW, Nissan Et al hold the same view.

It is suggested that as my slk200 has only traveled 18000 miles in 7 years then possibly the oil scraper/control rings are sticky and the engine needs further use? I am told that there is no exhaust gas test to tell if excessive oil is being burnt by the engine and the only way of determining the extent of the problem is by measuring the the oil consumed after a test run over a set distance. Sound really technical to me. With all the computers and analyzers available, has no one thought of putting a port in the exhaust manifold and analyzing what is being burnt in the engine? Perhaps the initial action should be to flush the engine with cleaner in an attempt to un-gum the rings?

Regards to All.

Few of my friends have M274 engine and M272 engine and non of them was complaining about the high engine oil use. My M271 was barely burning his oil like 200-300ml for every 7000 miles. I would push on them to fix this issue or just return the car to them.

My m272 engine hasn't used a drop of oil since i bought the car in January last year.
I've only done 5000 miles in it but the oil level has remained firmly on the max line since day one.
Reading your post has made me go and check it, as i hadnt done so for a couple of months.

Thanks for your replies,

I think my time has run out regarding returning this car? Is there a 30 day period? In which case I am stuck with it.

I am seriously considering writing my saga of pain directly to Mercedes UK, though I have heard that these people are ineffectual figure heads masquerading as a governing body. I might ring them as I just can not write out the full story and quote dates time etc etc ,. I am still convinced it needs a dose of flushing oil and new oil and filter.

I appreciate your feedback , many thanks

Tedfred.

I must say I'd be well miffed if I had a car that used appreciable quantities of oil, despite what Mercedes and other manufacturers say. To my mind, their interpretation of "acceptable" is simply not good enough. And once such an engine becomes "worn" the problem is only going to get worse, I feel. Good luck in sorting it !

Thanks Grahmcol,

The frustration I have is that technically I am taking a risk if I use engine flush to attempt to unblock the gummed up Rings
assuming they are bunged up. That of course assumes that I can find the dammed oil filter when I refill with oil.
If I was in any way aware of how scarce information was concerning this engine/car I would have bought a VW Golf.
Please note that I have yet to take the lower engine trays off the car and venture on an expedition of discovery.
An added worry is that its booked into the MB dealer I bought it from in two weeks, they are going to do a oil level test over a measured distance???? Sounds like a thrash around the countryside in my car at my expense to me, sorry that's cynical but you would feel the same if you had dealt with these cowboys.
Incidentally, if you Google " Mercedes complaints" you can get a PDF download explaining how seriously they view customer care. Then provide you with an 0 0800....... number that is out of use, the alternative number is associated with their finance division, the one which has previously taken me 7 telephone calls to speak with a representative who then tells me to go and consult an independent Financial adviser to answer questions on MB finance deals..........No! I am not making this up, I couldn't do that, I do not have the imaginative powers, if I had I would write fantasy fiction novels for a living.

Regards as always

At least they helpfully give you the details of the Ombudsman.....which is probably your next port of call I’m guessing

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I have just managed to e-mail them a pointed missive that they might like to inform me of their correct telephone number, or alternately ring me. I added, possibly foolishly, that they could alternatively continue to hide behind incorrect phone numbers in which case I will write to them and the rest of the planet via TWITTER and TRUSTNET.

I await their response, with quivering anticipation.

What sort of a company is this?

Regards

Tedfred

Hi tedfred. In my opinion the main problem here is the dealer itself. I would try to push on them to either fix this for you or exchange the car as there is a serious fault in it. The other option is to speak with the main Mercedes-Benz UK office and push on them so they will push on dealer to resolve your case. You can also use a small bit of social media :-D like their main facebook page etc. and complain there. Believe me they will respond to you really quick.

My brother just managed to get a new engine for his 8 year old Audi A5 from the main dealer (after a glass action in the US) , at no cost to him . He had an oil "level test " , all this was they checked and levelled the oil/ noted the mileage , then sent him off on his merry way , I told him stick it in sport , use the back roads and give it an Italian tune up . He did this and the warning light came on in 180 miles . He returned it to the main dealer and they took the engine apart with the intention of changing the Pistons , the damage was too great so new engine it was . I'm telling you this in case the level test is the same .

In my opinion eventually they will fix the issue but it is kind of a game now - who will give up first. I think if you will escalate this to the main office and you will keep pushing on a dealer eventually they will make a mistake or they will just fix the issue. Not all of the dealers are like that but it is hard to find a good one.

Thanks for your support Guys,

In fairness to all, the dealer has not yet looked at the Oil issue as I have had to wait 3 weeks in order to book a date when I can have the use of a courtesy car. Although thinking about it a three week wait speaks volumes.
I am tempted to put 5 litres of oil at £25 a through in the book and tell them to use that as opposed to billing me a tenner a litre, though I also feel its a problem they should fix at their expense.

While I am here, can anyone give me a rough location of the oil filter on a SLK 200 R172??? PLEASE.

Thanks again, regards Tefred

Thank you Lostkiwi,
From memory, I have looked at this component before and thought it could not possibly be an engine oil filter as it has "turbo ???" written around it's circumference? It was something I was going to photograph and send to you .

Many thanks for the image

Regards Tedfred

Hi Lostkiwi,
Did you once mention a meeting/gathering of Mercedes owners taking place around Oxfordshire sometime this month.
What is a gathering of Mercedes owners called anyway, is it a Flock or a Pride or Gaggle?

Tedfred
