Hi, what is the problem with your gearbox? Does it have a fault or are you just concerned about the oil ?
Looking for someone that may have come across a fault that my father in law has where it will change gear smoothly on low throttle openings but hesitates before selecting a gear when you accelerate hard! No faults show in a diagnostic test but it just seems to jerk a little while it is deciding what gear to use .

On a slightly different slant ( but transmission related !!! ) Are all of the ATF's on sale which meet MB 236.14 specs, backwards compatible with the 722.6 transmission? ( the ones which had red coloured fluid in them ? )
And does anyone know what the MB Nr. for ATF mean's? As in MB ATF Part Nr:- A000 989 08 04
Regards. Jim2

Yes you can put the 7g blue fluid in them, but you must flush everything of the old fluid (TC, coolers, pipes etc)

Any saw dust in the oil !!!!!!!!!
Joking aside, it does sound like an additive of some description has been put in to try and resolve something on the cheap, not a good place to be, filter will also be blocked if oil is thick, as it will cling.

To add ...
As the drained atf is suspect - which is the reason why you're draining it - then there is little point in refilling with fresh without first dropping the sump, thoroughly cleaning it out, and fitting a new filter.
Draining the sump through the drainplug will in any case only remove a portion of the suspect fluid, leaving the rest to contaminate any fresh fluid you put in.

Do it right, do it once.

Thanks Alexander. Lucky thing I asked the question, because I had read that the 236.14 was backwards compatible for the 722.6 box, and so assumed that it would be Ok to top-up my trans with it but they forgot to mention that it could not be mixed with older 236.10 Red fluid...So it's true that it is compatible with the 722.6 transmission.....but only when it's used for a complete flush and change.
Thanks again Alexander, that was a near miss......:eek::eek:.

Still on the same subject, would it be Ok to mix two ( red) fluids from different manufacturers, once they both meet the MB specs? I used Febi Bilstein 30018 ( Red ) on a recent change, and now I need to top-up, but it will take minimum 1 week to get the same ATF from England, so I'm wondering if I get some ATF locally ( Can't seem to find the FB 30018 here )
What do you think?
Thanks again.
Best Regards, Jim2

Are you sure that 236.15 (the blue ATF for 7g plus gearboxes) is backwards compatible and can be used in 722.6 gearboxes?

I have done it in the past, and have had advice recently from a very experienced MB tuning shop that says to use the newer fluid when rebuilding the boxes as it allows the gearbox to hold more torque without wearing the clutch packs.

The moral of the story is, use the 236.14 /15 backwards compatible, but only as a complete change...otherwise, the Red and the Blue are NOT to be mixed. But as I asked in an earlier post, is it OK to mix different manufacturers ATF ( Different brand names) same colour, and meeting MB specs 236.10? Has anyone done this in the past ( without it causing problems later on ) ?

I would do it. I always use febi branded ATF but you never know what's in it, I would mix them without issue

Hi Alexanderfoti, I cannot find Febi Bilstein 30018 easily locally, but I can get some Febi Bilstein 30017.
The 30018 is MB Rated 236.10 and the 30017 is MB rated 236.2, 236.6 and236.7.
Would they mix, do you think?

Some more info on the Febi Bilstein 30018 ATF. While searching locally for the elusive FB 30018, I made the discovery ( curtesy of local motor factor I am friendly with ) It seems that the FB 30018 and FB 22806 ATF is one and the same thing.....only difference is the quantities it is supplied in. the FB30018 is available in 5 ltr containers and the FB22806 is available in 1 ltr containers, otherwise, it's the same identical ATF.
So that's another bit of info supplied into the general fount of Mercedes ATF .
Now meanwhile, I have 6 ltrs of FB29449 ATF compatible with MB 236.14, enroute, so what to do? Return it, or keep it and at a future date get another 6 litres and do a complete ATF change again?
