Hi All,

I bought a C55 AMG about a month ago and am a little bit shocked at the condition it was kept it, though I got it at a steal, there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

My biggest concern is with the drive itself, though it is lovely and fast when it needs to be - there is a lot of lag when pressing the acceleration. Another worrying bit is that when in manual it only shows 4 gears and after 4, it goes into auto. I know it's an older car and things happen after time, but is there any any way I can get the car back to as close to original drive and reaction as possible?

I have done an ECU reset and the drive is very different!

I also need parts, so was wondering where to get OEM AMG parts (or is that a necessity?).

One more thing, is there a difference between an MB mechanic and an AMG mechanic?

Thanks for your help!

Hi and welcome.
The gearbox going 1,2,3,4,D is normal for the 5 speed auto.
If you mention where you are we can usually suggest good independent specialists (and for the ones we usually suggest AMG makes no difference).

Welcome and as LK says above the independant specialists recommended on here know AMG and AMG parts very well. Star in Caversham or Wayne Gates in Harrow are likely your ‘go to’ depending where you are.

Your box is fully auto...though you can downshift to 4th etc, depending on where you are starting from. You can even upshift...if you are in a lower gear.

That's it.

How do you know and what's the solution?

Naraic - are you saying 5th gear will never show? I swear I saw 5 when I did an ECU reset. Does anyone know how I can get the car driving like new?

90% of AMG parts seem to be AMG order only, had to give in a few times when no other alternative exists :(

I'm sure I have seem 5 show up on my instrument claster when I have use manual mode ;)

I am looking for parts currently, brake discs, front bumper and rear sway/anti roll bar - so should I go with AMG or MB parts? All this is so confusing, I'm not going to lie. Where is the best place to buy OEM parts?

Full manual mode you will see all 5

if you knock the lever when In S or C then you will see 1-2-3-4-D

If you call MB Grangemouth with your Vin number handy they can advise the correct OEM parts whether MB or AMG 01324 686002 - we get forum discount with them so OEM prices are very reasonable...

Panel parts etc bumpers, doors can be sourced second hand, there's is a few breakers around the country breaking an SL 55, mechanical parts best to buy new from as has been mentioned by John, MB Grangemouth great deals or Newcastle MB.
New AMG parts are from Mercedes anyway. ;)

Absolutely or ECP will no doubt stock the brake parts from Brembo or Pagid.

for the ARB's I would upgrade to H&R front and rear

Thanks.

I was reading about the h&r Arbs and it said something about scraping etc... Is that actually the case?

Thanks everyone for your help. I seem to be a fish out of water and the help is greatly appreciated. It also seems like I'm one of the few with a C55

I doubt it, they are made for the car, adjustable for stiffness and come with poly bushes, ECP are the importers, superb quality

Thanks for the help guys - I tried the ECU reset this weekend, but only showed as 4 gears, not sure if I done it correctly, I shall try again this weekend.

Ordered the parts from MB, with discount - so thanks for that John Laidlaw

The only things that are problems are the front bumper, which needs to be completely replaced, I would love for it to come with a Carbon Fibre lip, but not sure where to even start looking at that.

Thanks.
