I'm in the process of replacing the N/S door speaker on our car.
A friend of mine who is breaking a SL 500 has removed the speaker and it is a Bose unit. I haven't removed my one yet and I was wondering whether the standard SL 500 has the Bose speaker?

Many thanks
Peter

No sir they are not the same but they should work OK. Bose speaker are not standard.

You should change them both.

Bose was a cost option on the SL500. Many do have it though. Its option 810 on the datacard.

The door speakers in the SL are plastic glued into a three way pod. replacing just one is tricky as over time the pod becomes brittle. You can get a whole new (non Bose) pod with the three speakers for about £80!
the Bose pod/speakers is a different price and the speakers are a different impedance.

Hi,

Can I fit the same Bose unit in a SL 350 that came with the standard speakers?

You can as the cut outs in the doors are all the same.

Hi Alfie,
I haven't found any difference between the standard speaker and the Bose unit after replacing the passenger one, it sounds exactly the same as the drivers door, although the Bose unit is Chinese
Oh the plastic plug connection was different, I had to extract the small wires from the plastic and swap them over.

The inbuilt amp in the comand does not the same output as the Bose amp, looking at the chips fitted, they cannot put out more than about 15w RMS

Hi Malcolm,

I got them from Mercedes as I couldn't find them from any Breakers.
However, my installers said they don't fit though they can still get them fitted. Also from the look, the old ones have 3 speakers but the Bose has 2. My installers have assured me they can still get them fitted.
Just wondered what you think. I already have an alpine head unit and sub fitted.

It does not matter if 2 or 3 speakers, the sound goes out sideways, maybe you could add some tweeters in the mirror triangle like the later cars

I have an enormous woofer under the passenger footwell, this helps sound quality, Not sure if all cars had it, or whether it was Bose only.

Only fitted with Bose and HK, there is no way that a standard radio/comand can drive one.

Good to hear your reading and researching posts Monkey Wrench :)
I got my speakers second hand from a breaker, there are a few of these cars being broken, or you can possibly get aftermarket ones if you don't want To get them through Mercedes.
