During a drive down to Exeter yesterday I was surprised of the apparent mpg, so much I asked the wife to take a pic. After refusing she took one. I kept it steady all the way, the engine just ticks over at these speeds.

In Germany 3 years ago in my E350CDI, on a very hot day.
A mixture of Autobahn & A roads.

They are surprisingly good when trogging.

I can get 50 MPG reading on my old 320cdi but I think a following wind, some downhill and an optimistic computer helps.

The one that matters is the crawling around town 21-24 MPG that I often see.

I do very little town driving, use my wife SLK200 for that. Almost all journeys are over 20 miles return.
Gives me about 48MPG over the year.

A couple of weeks ago I managed just over 50mpg from Norwich to Dover and averaged 47mpg in France, higher speeds in France.

The E350 is a superb long distance cruiser with loads of mid range grunt.

I used to have an S350 D and it would regularly achieve this level of mpg when on the motorway. Really good performing cars. IMG_20140629_201411 - Copy.jpg

Ok, when I first picked up the car I averaged 40mpg. That was a 210 journey with spirited driving. I was very surprised with what I got back.

Mine was literally motorway all the way, and nothing much above 70

Corrected that for you ;)

I got 39.9 to Silverstone and back which considering the amount of stuff in the car and loads on A roads was great so maybe 52 is possible.

You weren't far from me, I am only 25 miles down the road in Torquay

I saw 58.9 over 100 miles today, lot's of 50mph on the m6 though between manchester and birmingham. I reckon with a few tanks of a more premium fuel that would be around 60+ mpg. Not to get that debate going on this thread too :geek:

My commute from Newark to Birmingham twice a Week during rush hour (takes me two hours each way easily) I see 46 as the average even with a couple of blasts to get rid of tailgaters

Modern cars are amazing on fuel, especially diesels.

Now I know nobody buys an SL350 for it’s fuel economy, but I’ve been amazed that on a long run on an uncongested M’way ( if that’s possible these days) at a steady 70ish mph mine returns about 31mpg, a figure that any 1.6 petrol would’ve averaged 20 years ago!

If they were willing to put the 2.1 diesel in the SLK, why not put the 3.0 diesel in the SL? I reckon people would have bought it

Possibly Glynn, my daily driver is a diesel which is very economical, but just doesn’t have the same soundtrack as a big V6 3.7 petrol, so not sure that a diesel SL would appeal, especially with the top down

the SLK250 cdi seems to sell quite well from what I can tell, without the soundtrack. Though I guess it is at a different price point to the SL.

Lot of those SLK 250 cdi seemed to go through lease packages, whereas the SL I think is rarely leased...and as you say Glynn different price point
