Hi there, I have a 1988 w124 coupe which I’m having some bodywork done to. New Mercedes front wings are on order, and my next step is to sort out the sagging front bumper.

I have all new mountings brackets (the L shaped ones) for both sides. However my issue now is that the small U shaped attachment points spot welded to the front structure of the car are very badly corroded. Seems like a very poor design, especially as the car isn’t fitted with full wheel arch liners.

Anyway, my question is if these two small attachment pieces are available as repair panels that my body shop can weld in, or will they have to fabricate something?

The parts diagrams for this model aren’t very detailed, so I was hoping someone else has completed this type of repair and could share their wisdom!

Example photo attached to show to area in question.

Thanks.

Poor design ? Maybe. But the car is 30 years old so I'd say it's done pretty well.

Went through this when i removed and replaced my front wing just a few weeks back . Problem is the sealant used 30 years backl gets very hard and cracks to let in water . I cleaned all the area under the wing along with the bumper mountings and sprayed it with Hammerite Under Body Seal Wth Extra Waxoyl £11.49 for 2 500m tins . Check you wings when you get them to see if they are genuine .And if they are you should see a star stamp up by the bolt holes . I had one with no markings on so returned it .And went for a good part worn and then i had it re DSC04408.JPG DSC04408.JPG DSC04407.JPG DSC04407.JPG DSC04407.JPG DSC04407.JPG DSC04407.JPG painted ..

+1 I would say its a good design if it has lasted this long!

If they are available as repair kits, then MB parts dept will be able to locate them, I think.

The bracket appears to be A1248850012

Somebody who knows the 124 on EPC should be able to find it.

Thanks and yes the brackets are available. I’ve already picked them up. The trouble is that there is no longer a sound surface to bolt them to on the car. The area circled in my original photo has mostly rusted away on both sides given that it is a thin piece of steel. I get the impression the solution will involve fabrication.

I feel like you are probably right, but there are many odd brackets etc listed on EPC so you never know. The other side may have a Pn if it's still intact.

I catched mine just in time .Ground off all the light corrosion and treated it with Mertalmorphosis then cover it with Hamerite with extra waxoyl .
