Hi
I bought this car few months ago , I got problem recently with my mb (eclass e220 cdi 2005). Car starts ok wen is cold but when engine is warm and u switch it off , then it doesnt starts after wards straightaway. Message appear on the speedo meter screen that ESP fault. And Take atleast 1hr to cool down and then it starts again.
Wondering its the battery or the starting motor or central locking etc???

Your car is showing the classic symptoms of a failed Crankshaft sensor.
Needs to be taken to a MB specialist ideally to have the stored fault codes read.

Thanks for the reply mate. If I jump start it, it starts away even with hot engine and and fault flash etc

Hmmm. Never heard of a jump start being successful if the CPS is faulty??

Those stored fault codes need to be read to investigate further.

Re the ESP message, this may be of interest and indded your problem after all.

That's pretty old... It's quite likely on its last legs but get it tested and replaced if necessary.

13 years? Yikes
I replace mine at 5 regardless, more recent vehicles with the masses of electrickerry barely last that !
Would be my first action

As above. If it fails to start when hot but otherwise runs and starts normally, first suspect is usually the CPS.
However, if it can be easily jump started when hot then that rules out the CPS, which usually needs time to cool down before it will operate correctly again.

Battery is next suspect. It may turn the engine over for starting purposes, but may not either accept a full charge or maintain it while driving. Checking the alternator output is also worthwhile.

Winter's approaching and your battery is past its sell by date and will fail completely soon, so it's good insurance to renew it anyway. That at least eliminates one possible cause of future trouble.

The battery in my 210 is 15 years old(!) so I put it on a battery tester. It's rated at 760CCA. On the tester it managed 230....
That's why I said to get yours checked. Mine will be replaced in a week or two. I'm fortunate enough to have a spare car if needed so it's not high priority.

so if its gets a battery boost ( turns over faster), its starts , yet deisels use compression to start once hot , does that not mean you have a compression issue ?

Could be, but diesel compression normally goes up when warm.

Could be that the battery is old and knackered and cant spin the higher compression engine fast enough.

The CLk270 cdi I had, had a battery that tested at 150CCA / 10 aH!!!

It just about started the car, but the whole dash and all the electrical stuff turned off whilst starting, could be getting voltage low enough to cut out the engine/gearbox ecu.

(that CLK had a new battery, which also stopped the android head unit cold booting on startup)

I remember Toyota had a massive issue with non starting D4D engines fitted to the Avensis , the starter motors wernt spinning the engine over fast enough for the electronics to instruct the fueling etc to start , it was a tiny amount but enough to stop the car starting

Hi
Been to few garages but still no one can find out the exact problem, changed the battery, they checked the alternator, starting motor, all is good but cannot start the car without jump start. Don't know who will solve this puzzle?

If you are close to us, give us a call. Could be fuel pressure, could be cam/crank sensors. Need to get some actual values whilst the car is in a non start condition.

Different car but 911's can suffer from poor or no hot starting because the main battery lead has corrosion from water ingress (cable is basically black inside). Always starts when cold but when hot the car just won't start. No idea if you have the same issue but I'd take a look. For the 911 the replacement upgraded cable is only £85, only problem is you have to drop the engine and gearbox to fit it...

Op popped by today, fuel pressure good at 55psi, however, couldn't reproduce the fault!

OP, come back when you get a chance and can leave the car with us for a few hours, we should then be able to re-produce it and diagonise!
