CLK 200 Kompressor Timing Issue

I'm newbie to the forum but looking at threads think I have a common timing chain problem with my CLK 200 kompressor 2009 plate.
Background is one morning car wouldn't start but turned over. Recovered to Indy garage who advised camshaft engine magnets failed and oil in wiring loom. All replaced but still not starting. Apparently not an issue with ECU and have suggested timing chain has jumped with need to replace chain and possibly full timing gear including camshaft sprockets. Cost to do this might far outstrip value of car so brought home to try and repair myself.
Going to run a compression test and if this doesn't throw up any issues will take a crack at the timing chain replacement but need some basic advice.
Once stripped down plan to check timing marks. If these are "off" is it still a case of replacing the timing chain, etc (will share photos once I get to this point)?
Also looking for a good repair manual - any suggestions?

If you get it apart to check timing it will be fairly obvious if the sprocket and chain need replacing.
If it's jumped a tooth they definitely need doing.

What mileage have you got on the car ?

Thanks. I ran the compression test and got the following readings:

1: 110 dry, 120 wet
2: 100 dry, 110 wet
3: 65 dry, 75 wet
4: 95 dry, 115 wet

Do you think there's wider problems given the result for cylinder 3?

Those readings look very low to me. I'd expect at least 165psi and a variation of less than 10%

Cam timing issues can give poor compression.

Right on the mileage for these to jump at....

I would be checking the timing as a next step, this will give low compression readings if its off.

As Alex has posted above. You will need the special tools to time it up properly and reset the camshafts if they are out of time, there is a locking plate for the cams.

The cause is the variators that jam causing the chain to stretch, its rare the chain stretches on its own. Why is why your Indy recommended replacement I suspect.

View attachment 46659 Started the strip down and have access to the sprockets. They look knackered and need replacing (see 1st photo). There's also some muck -not metallic feeling but seems more like burnt oil see (2nd photo). Lined crank shaft pulley up to TDC but sprocket marks seem way off (3rd and 4th photo). Read somewhere that it needs to be when cylinder 1 is TDC - how do I check I've got TDC for cylinder 1?

That's knackered. Definitely needs sprockets and chain. If you're lucky it won't have bent a valve.

To find TDC rotate the cranky the TDC mark while watching number 4 cylinder valves. As the exhaust valve closes and inlet opens anc the mark on the crank pulley shows TDC that's TDC for number 1. Given your sprockets have jumped it might be more difficult.

Thanks really appreciate the advice. Any suggestions on where to get the sprockets/chain? Prices seem to vary when looking on eBay/m271.com. Know I need to invest in a Cam alignment locking tool but any advice on any other specialist equipment needed for the job?

You could give MB Grangemouth a ring , mention the forum , they give a good discount and deliver for £5 . That at least will give you a base price .
That black oil gunk was surprising , when was the last oil change ?

I'm trying to find a decent (idiots) repair manual on the car before going any further. Tried Haynes but no luck and bought one from e-manuals online which wasn't what I was expecting and not easy to follow. Any suggestions on where I can find one.

Search on eBay for WIS - there are plenty of copies available.
WIS is the dealer level repair manual.
