Own a 2012 Fire opal red SLK which over the space of 2 weeks has developed sever top coat peeling and blistering. A friend of mine in the body repair business tells me that this is a well known issue with MB's in this colour and is due to micro bubbles in the red undercoat due to a possible technical issue with the paint. In the US there is now a class action law suit agains MB for covering up (sic) a know issue with this red paint. Any one have some guidelines about who to approach as regarding this issue. I am in the process of e-mailing MB UK with pictures of the issue. Clear from previous post that this is an issue for other owners and appears to predate the 2012 manufacture of my SLK.

Sorry to see this and yes it is a known issue that MBUK are sorting out with a complete respray in some cases, not a good advert for a prestige brand so little wonder.

I’d be approaching your MB dealer about it, lots get resprayed. Don’t know how linked MB will make any warranty claim to main dealer serving (it is unrelated but they do like to make a fuss over things at times). I’ve known a few go through no issues so please let’s us know how you get on.

There’s loads on here about this , if you do a quick search.
MB seem to be doing the right thing now, as there has been so many cases.
I heard quite a few getting Full re paints, which can’t be cheap.
How much of your vehicle is effected. ?
Do you have Full MB history ?

I know of an SLK55 AMG of a similar era which was completely resprayed( and looks stunning) and a C63 Ed 507 which is getting done early next year....
Both had full MB history IIRC

Don't know where you live Eric but MB Manchester seem particularly good at sorting these claims out. You may have to wait a while to get the work done since there seems to be a long queue. Make sure you get a full bare metal respray though. Some owners have been fobbed off with part resprays and/or a bit of sanding and paint. Neither will work and these cars have had to go back several times. Personally I think it was totally disingenuous of MB and their dealers to cover up this defect for years. Hope you get it sorted- it's a great colour on the right model.

MB seem to be reacting in a correct manner with this paint problem......Now if they would give the same attention to the problem of Artico covered seats, which also a production fault.

Practicing good grammar cos I'm travelling darn sarf this week and they don't seem to like Northeners.
Agreed, you get frowned at when trying to order chips 'n gravy but it's a lot warmer though so you won't be needing your coat
