GLA45 AMG
Hi All

One of the reasons I chose to purchase a GLA45 AMG is that on the review sites, and places like Autotrader, the fuel economy listed for the car is roughly:

Urban mpg: 34 mpg
Extra Urban: 50.4 mpg
Average mpg: 42.8 mpg

I've had my 2015 GLA45 for several months now and I'm not getting anywhere near that economy. I'm averaging around 29MPG according to the trip computer. Even if I undertake a motorway journey, with cruise control set at around 68mph, I'm still only getting 34mpg.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone manage to get the claimed fuel economy? I can't decide if there's a fault with the car or the claimed economy is false.

Any experiences would be much appreciated!

Justin.

Claimed MPG for all manufacturers these days are misleading as they are obtained in a controlled test environment with no aerodynamic drag.

Your average does seem a little low but not excessively in my mind, probably worth a decent service with all fluids changed and a check of simple things like pads and hubs to ensure all is moving freely. That said if you stick your toe down just a tiny bit in the 45's it eats fuel for a 2.0l turbo engine, I remember my old 3.0l V6 Clio used to average 22-23 if I was bring sensible, it often saw single digets if I was giving it one though

29-34mpg is about right for a 300+bhp medium size vehicle, I’m getting about the same figures from my BM 435i which will improve marginally as the weather warms

I believe it’s nearer 380bhp so you don’t expect good fuel economy from that sort of engine. The new WLTP figures, which are supposed to reflect “real world” driving more accurately, show 30.1mpg combined so you are not far off.

So, enjoy it. I’m not, so far, getting more than 27mpg from my new GLC43 but I’ll live with it!

I agree. 30mpg sounds OK for a total average across all types of driving.

Yup. Had one on loan for a couple of weeks. Smidge under 30 is real world. It'll easily return worse if you are hooning.

..... I was following one of these in my Smart Roadster last night on my way home from work. Twisty A/B road are the Roadster's forte and I was right behind him/her all the way ... especially on the bends. The GLA was getting faster all the time but I was right there behind him/her. When we got to a 'rat run' that avoids a roundabout that the GLA took it but as it was evening & the traffic light I took the roundabout route and passed the end of the 'rat run' just before the GLA  so then gave a couple of flashes of my hazards :p. Needless to say the GLA was right up my harris until such time he/she could overtake ..... I then got a repeat of my couple of flashes on the hazards ;).
It's funny how people have to have the upper hand when confronted by a 'bl00dy Smart' :D:D:D:D

Good place to look for real mileages is fuelly. Tracks real time mileage from everyday users.

Not used on my Mercedes cars, but when I used for my RAV4 T180, real mpg was massively down as per Toyotas spec.

This week I have been keeping my commute speed down to 60mph on cruise. My average speed has decreased by 2mph (!) to 57, but my fuel efficiency has increased from 24 to 29.5 average.

It’s surprising what can be achieved by keeping a steady speed.

Conservation of momentum Craig... tis a wondrous thing! (When done deliberately, and is under control!)

Agreed, look ahead and don't brake for anything, also setting the cruise on my W213 just below 70 I could get over 80mpg for a 180 mile trip.

Generalised tips for better fuel efficiency:_

1. Don't accelerate uphill
2. Don't drive hard until the engine is warmed-up.
3. Don't use the cruise control unless you accept it will give worse figures than doing it yourself.
4. Avoid short journeys and don't expect good economy if you live in an area with traffic lights every 50 yards.

If your daily driving doesn't stick to most of the above, the figures you are getting are to be expected.

Stop worrying and enjoy that kick-in-the-back!
Alternatively, accept that you have bought the wrong car for your priorities...

I find (and have done across the last quarter million miles) that using cruise control averages out somewhat better than manual pedal control.

I can beat cruise control economy just but that’s not why I bought my car. That’s a compromise I do make. Otherwise I’d be switching off the AC next and taking a dump before I drive anywhere...

Well, that last tank saw an actual measured average of 27.5mpg. That's an improvement of 12% over normal driving.
