About to buy a fully-loaded A Class 160 Petrol (2009 Elegance.) On downloading the VIN details it states gearbox is 'Eight-speed Dual Clutch Automatic Gearbox' but I always thought all A class of this period were CVT boxes. Can the VIN details be wrong?!

Not all of them had CVT. If you can avoid it, do so!

So does that mean they fitted both systems to the 1.5 petrol engine in 2009 - and the VIN details would be correct for DCT ?

If its a W169, like this: upload_2019-1-12_19-0-58.jpeg

Then it will either have a CVT auto or a Manual, no DCT options on these.

A150 manual, smart forTwo, W205 AMG line premium plus.
2005 - 2011 W169 is either Manual or CVT auto just as above has stated.

This is really strange. Can VIN details be incorrect? I've consulted three and they all state the gearbox is '8-speed automatic dual clutch'. I only wonder as Parkers site with all the stats of Merc. A series give two gearbox types - CVT and Tip Auto between 2005 and 2011 with Tip Auto finishing after May 2008. So it would seem the W169 were not solely/only manual or CVT?

VIN details can be incorrect, yes. Someone keys the info into the DVLA's system, so errors can occur.
Pretty sure the guys above will be right about the W169 info. Plus the DCT on the later A-Class isn't 8 speed either, it's 7 as far as I know. Seems to suggest a whole batch wrongly entered on the system.

Not unusual for car sales sites to be incorrect.
W169 was 5 speed manual, 6 speed manual or CVT.
W176 was DCT.
