Evening all!
I have a year 2000 ML55, which has a few gremlins, latest one is the siren firing off randomly

Hoping to draw on your knowledge to educate myself and keep her on the road for as long as possible.

Please excuse any irritating questions I may post!

Welcome to the forum.
The siren issue is almost certainly the internal batteries have started to corrode.
A new siren, which is plug and play will solve the problem. Main dealer item. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134780633531?hash=item1f618d41bb:g:bwEAAOSw5cNYPalB
Usually in the bulkhead end of the wheel arch behind the liner.
Just a torx bit to unbolt and disconnect and reversal to fix new one.

It is ridiculous how the price of these type of electronic components has rocketed.

Indeed I just searched the forum and they were 100 pounds a year ago.
No doubt i shunned MB when they quoted 160 for a parking sensor last month. I had 3 die last month and got 3 used off ebay 15 pounds each and the right colour.

In my Post#4 above, I believe I may have sent you looking in the wrong place for the alarm siren.
It's inside the engine bay at the back against the bulkhead on the LHS. Look for an electrical plug to unclip.
