If you get your car plugged into Star diagnostics at a dealer/specialist they can tell you exactly which sensor is faulty in about 10 seconds after pluging Star into your car. This is how I found out which one of mine I needed to replace.

This same problem has just arisen on our 2005 CLS, it was doing it a lot on saturday, but then not at all on sunday so hopefully it has fixed itself. We were away over xmas so the car sat covered in snow for about 3 weeks, could that be a potential cause?

Does not the gear selector, select either the front or rear, and the rear only active in R

Incorrectly painted sensor will not work as the face cannot resonate at the 22khz frequency

Yep, rears only active in R - problem only occurring at the front, not on startup but when it reactivates on dropping under 10mph (or whatever the threshold is)

No paintwork has been done so I hope that isn't the problem!

I think that if you have paid to have this checked,,they should have told you what one is faulty,,maybe their engineer is not good with STAR

Sorry for not being clear, I haven't had it checked yet, just wondered whether the prolonged snow cover could have caused it. It's an intermittent problem at the mo, if it persists I will have to have it checked over by Mercedes.

You could unplug them one by one till you found the faulty on,,but harder when intermittent,, it could be just a loose connector on one

One of the sensors failed in my car last week. It took about five minutes to pinpoint the faulty sensor using the Star machine. Having the faulty sensor replaced tomorrow.

The sensors do not like getting wet, prolonged snow will not have helped here.

Try taking off your bumper strips and removing the sensors. Remove the rubber seals around the front of the sensors, clean and dry the sensors and then before refitting them, dry out the sensor plugs with a hairdryer to make sure they are completely dry. I understand there is a reasonable chance you can fix the problem just by ensuring they are fully clean and dry

Thanks for that, unfortunately the CLS doesn't have bumper strips, the sensors are just embedded into the bumper so I imagine it's a bumper off job to remove the sensors? I'll have a go at just pointing a hairdryer at each of the sensors if the problem persists, otherwise it'll be off to Mercedes to find out which ones need replacing.

Hey Malcolm!

I own an e270 cdi avantgarde, and an e320 cdi avantgarde. I have the same parktronic issues as described here.

Can you send me the same document?

regards

Magnus, Norway. odontologi@gmail.com

Hello Malcolm, Magnus, and everybody. Another Norwegian member here with the same problem. I thought I should try to save some money by cleaning, drying and checking the contacts and sensors, and maybe get them to work, but I don`t see how I can remove the front bumper inserts with the sensors. I would be very happy if I could have that document, too. Thanks.

Thank you sooo much. I don`t want to be a PITA, but according to those documents, I`ll have to remove the whole bumper. In one of the documents it says: "Remove ram strip (1) from front bumper (2)". Isn`t that do-able?
Looks like the "ram strip" is the piece where the sensors are attached to.
Thanks

The strip the sensors are held in to can be removed, if you look at where the strip go's around the bumper, that has to be pulled there on that bend, that will pull the locking tabs at each end out of the bumper, be warned, you have to use some force, it dont give up easy!!!!
