Hi All
Another query for the experts to point me in the right direction please...

Driving along quite happily and then the car [E220 Cdi - Automatic] seems to have high revs and does not want to change gear.....at this point it also will not change gear by me knocking the gear shift to the side to try and put it in an actual gear rather than automatic......??

I had to pull over and stop the car, take the key out and start the car again.....once I done this all seemed to be OK....it changes gears as it should in automatic and I could also knock the gear stick to choose an actual gear..

This has happened twice now in 2 weeks.

Anyone any ideas what it could be and how much it will be for my indie to fix...?

Thanks in advance

Electro-plate in the autobox playing up. Implausible speed sensor value in my case. Luckily only happened the once (so far!). Did your EML come on as well?

Mobilo tech reckoned approx £1k for MB to fix. Indie possibly just £300 IIRC the part is only £150 .. (MB only replace the complete assembly!)

Popped in to se my Indie today as I am back driving now...he done a quick diagnostic test and a few errors appeared.

First of all he wants to change the battery as a lot of undervoltage errors came up [battery is origianl and car is an 55 plate], and also do a gear box fluid change and filter change.....see if that makes any difference and if not then take the gear box etc out and have a good look.

Will update when more news incase anyone is interested....

Cheers

I would love to help, but we need a list of those fault codes!

If you want a guess, I will say the electroplate, as has been guessed at before.

The low voltage fault codes are only relevent if stored in the gearbox ECU in relation to valve body voltage supply, if they were stored in other modules this is not relevent. It would be very unusual for a 2005 W211 to need a new battery anyway. And if it were the battery, it would occur from the first start of the day, typically.
I have not known these problems be cured by a fluid change either, unless the fluid were exceptionally degraded, which could be checked by a visual examination via the dipstick.

And now they want to take the 'box out to have a look? On the basis of which fault codes?

The speed plate is the first thing that should have been done in my view

Any update on this as my W211 E280 does a similar thing. It is OK on a journey up to 2 hours in length but when I extend to 3 hours the gearbox refuses to change gear. If I then stop and take the key out of the ignition and restart all goes back to normal. It has been like this for 2 years now and is quite predictable. The oil has been changed by MB but that is all I have tried.

Had the car back in yesterday to have the Electro plate changed.
Also had a B service at the same time.

also, need some gearbox oil, air filter and elec. plug

It does seem a bit smoother in the gear changes but I suppose I won't know until I have driven it for a week or so as the fault was intermittent.....will update either way later in the week.

Total bill for above..??.....£845.........:(

Don't know mileage, but when I bought mine at auction with 100k plus I expected to have to replace the box (Valeo coolant/box oil mixing issue) and I wasn't dissappointed. I put it off for nearly a year as it was surviveable, but did it eventually when I was happy the car was a keeper. The guys who changed the box were Lowes of Barnsley - good job, no probs 35k later - and they said that the modern boxes, esp those which suffered the sealed for life lie, were only fit for 100k, and in their opinion MB were happy that you would have to replace with new at that point. Bit dissappointing when I have MBs of an older generation with 150+, 228+ and 248+ k miles on, all on original boxes. Progress eh?????????
In view of your expenditure so far you will soon be better going for a swap (just under 2k for me in Dec 2009). May be worth you giving them a call. No connection by the way.

Why did it need gearbox oil again? Did they have to drain it out to fix it?

Do you know how much they charge per hour for labour and what is a good hourly rate to pay?

Genuine questions - I usually just use a local garage but am thinking about taking my new (old) purchase to an indie for a service and inspection.

I would keep the car after this

I make the total £485 for the gearbox job including VAT it was an hours job to do that so £385 would have been nearer the mark for doing the job

Note that Euro Car Parts can now supply genuine electroplates, of the latest version, at a good discount from MB prices.
