Having just bought this car I find the automatic immobilizer setting itself after 20 secs very annoying. Is it possible to disable this function but still have the immobilizer set itself when the car is locked?.

Hi,
Not sure what the problem you refer to is. Do you mean that the alarm, siren sets ?.Not sure why the immobiliser setting is a problem if you are not going anywhere.
Perhaps I am reading this wrong !!.
My alarm, immobiliser sets when locked unless I have turned it off using the "tow away switch".

Hi, my point is that when you pop into a shop for a paper or something quickly then after 20 secs the immobilizer sets itself. This means that, to start the car, you have to then lock/unlock with the remote control rather than just putting the key in and starting. Therefore I would like to disable the immobilizer when the car is unlocked but enable it when locked. My car does not have a " tow-away" switch.

I get you.
I always lock my car with the remote even for a short time , just habit - never thought of your issue because of that...

I suspect your immobiliser is a third party add on.
What does the key look like?

Hi, The key is a standard Mercedes one button key with the "fly-out" metal key to insert into the dash, unlock the steering lock, and turn to start. It may be, as John says, the fact that down here in deepest West Wales we don't bother to lock our cars if we are only leaving them for a couple of minutes. I just find it irritating to get into the car, put the key in the ignition and try to start the engine only to find that I have to remove the key, point it at the mirror, press lock, and then immediately unlock and then insert and start the car!.

Interesting as mine has the same one button key but no immobiliser.

Depends on the M/Y

My 94 (95 m/y) has an immobiliser, but only activates with the alarm.
Lots of minor tweaks to stuff around the mid 90s

Or the OP could just get used to locking car when leaving it as those of use who live near Manchester do as a matter of course. Problem solved.

Now I understand your problem better. That is not a problem with mine, 99 model. I don't know the answer to your dilemma.

Hi,
What the OP is describing is what is called "Passive Arming" and from what I can remember cannot be switched off, it was a requirement to get the security system fitted Thatcham approved.
I had it on the system in my 97 C230K, it just meant I had to get into the habit of locking it.

Thanks for that. The system is the original MBSS as fitted from new and is operating as described in the book so it looks as if I will just have to get used to locking/unlocking the car even for a 2 minute stop.

That won't do you any harm. And up here a 2 minute stop is about 119 seconds more than enough for the local scumbags to be off with your pride and joy.
