E220 cdi 2002
Hi there all, new member here looking for some advice. I recently bought a 2002 e220 cdi avantgarde. It has developed a fault which I'm trying to solve and fix. It feels a bit sluggish and when taken to over 80mph, goes into a sort of limp mode and won't downshift. It doesn't like revving over 2500 rpm. Once you turn off the engine, it drives fine again but smokes under hard acceleration for a little while and then clears. Yesterday it started to sound like it was misfiring a little bit and the a large puff of black smoke appeared and then it drove fine afterwards, no sign of the fault at all, really responsive, revved high, happy to go over 80 etc but then all of a sudden, on another journey it reappeared. It also sounds like a loud sucking noise when the turbo is working, this also disappeared when the fault did briefly but has also returned. Sorry for the long post but just wanted to explain as best as I could. Any help greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read.
Regards

Steve

You will need codes read to help with diagnosis.

A code reader is a must tool kit iten now.

Yeah I appreciate that, definitely something I need to invest in. If nothing shows on the dash and the fault clears when the engine is turned off, will a fault reader still detect anything is wrong?

Faults will store even if the car rights itself. Stores in shadow memory.

Best one for reading Mercedes code properly (apart fom STAR) is the carsoft MBII, okay not the cheapest but it does accurately describe faults where as others often go down the route

Quick update for anyone who's reading. I've had green flag out to it to see if they would put in on a code reader, told them what car it was and what age but they sent a guy out with a reader that wouldn't work on a car so old. He said that it wouldn't show anything as the engine management light never comes on, is that right? Is there anyone localish to Swindon who could help me out or anyone know how much Mercedes would charge for plugging it in?

It's within an hour so not too far away. Have you got any contact details for him?
