Hi All
Please can anyone tell me what the 6.5 level in the sump is in mm.
I am purchasing a dipstick and all the markings are mm.
Also do you check oil level when the engine is cold or 15mins after a run.
On the hidden sevice check it seems to go up and down
The car is a 05 c200 cdi w203.
Thank you in advance.

You can buy a dipstick (Ebay) that has max and min markings, especially for the 646 series engine.
With those markings, you don't need to worry about millimetre levels.

I measure my oil with a hot engine , 10mins after I have stopped on a level surface .

Me? I always do it cold, after an overnight stop.
Consistent each time because there is always maximum drain-back into the sump.
It's consistency of measurement that is all important, more than exactly when the measure is taken.
Each to his own, huh?

My drive is at an angle , so the only level bit nearby is my neighbours when they are at work and I've come back from a drive , so it's always hot .

I always did the same. But I don't think my Merc's level sensor tends to agree with me

Apparrently you are supposed to measure it when its hot, and has had 10 mins to drain down.
Especially if you use Mobil1 0W40. As that stuff expands like hell when it is hot.

I didnt believe it, but tried it after they told me. WOW that stuff really expands.
Big difference in reading hot and stone cold the next morning.

Sadly its a real pain as my drive has a slight slope and the CL500 varies quite a lot dependant on which way you park. So driving to the nearest flat surface and having to wait is a pain.
I have now worked out where it should be dependant on the direction, one is over and one is under.

Hi
I have just checked oil level cold standing overnight with new dipstick and it reads 140mm. When I checked the hidden service check it says 6.61. I think I will believe the dipstick and will leave as it is.

I do mine when the engine is cold and has been standing a while, always have done. I always understood that that was the correct way :)

Every week with the dipstick (in the library, Colonel Mustard) is a good habit to get into.

Engine hot, wait 5 minutes on level ground and check via dipstick if you have one...
