hi, please help I am getting opposite answers to this. my 2003 e270 w211 auto Mercedes, 102k, do you recommend gearbox oil change, some say yes and some say not if its running ok, which it is. I was thinking buying the gear and doing it myself at same time do my own engine oil change, sing one the vacuum pumps sold on the net. thanks in advance for help and advice.

The gearbox used to be "sealed for life" but recommendations now are to change the ATF at 37.5k mile intervals.
So yes, if your's hasn't been done, it will benefit.

There is no such a thing as "sealed for life" gearboxes.
All boxes have a pan that can be removed, filter and gaskets that can be replaced.
The tag "sealed for life" only refers to certain VIN cars where there was no mention in the service schedule that the gearbox oil needs to be changed periodically.
This is in reality nonsense and people with such cars have realised otherwise and get the gearbox oil changed every 37.5k miles.
If your car falls under one of the "sealed for life" boxes then you just have to remember to get the job done yourself as it won't ever come up on a service sheet.

As above. No matter how sealed for life the statement may be, oil is oil. I'm thinking of changing mine soon.

I had mine changed after 5 years. It might be my imagination but I am sure it changed smoother afterwards.

The comments here are presuming you have the 5 speed gearbox. If your's is 7 speed, then they don't apply. With the 270 engine, your's is probably 5 speed.

5 SPEED:
If you decide to do it yourself, you'll need the ATF (try Opie Oils for this, and use 226.14 MB spec fluid), the filter, and the sump gasket). You can get the latter two items from OneStopGearboxShop - or Ebay.

The job is straighforward. Look at the sticky up top in this section to give you guidance. The filter is inside the sump and just unclips. A shallow, wide container of some sort (large baking tray?) would also be useful to catch the remaining fluid after draining the sump before you remove it.

Make sure you have a gearbox dipstick, as you will need to follow the correct sequence (see sticky) when checking the ATF level after refilling.

Can I piggy back on this thread and ask what folks are paying an indy or MB for the trans oil change.

The term "sealed for life " should be changed to "sealed till death or outside warranty period " :)

For the 5g I would think £150-250 depending on Main dealer or Indy . Don't forget to ask if the quote involved draining the torque converter as well ....as this is half the oil quantity .

I have the same one as yours but I didn't notice any major difference after changing the ATF. For the peace of mind, i would suggest changing it.

I would only go Fuchs Titan ATF 4134 (or MB which is expensive. ) , the Fuchs is factory fill for MB , and it's cheaper than Comma at 8litres on eBay for £52.80 . Never heard of anyone using Comma in gearbox before , I know it's the right spec , but not for me I'm afraid .

+1 on that I'm using only FUCHS oil/fluid for the last decade in my cars and never had an issue.
