Another vote for Subaru... we've had a modern Forester for a while now and it's an excellent all-rounder, loads of room, really capable offroad and the quoted mpg figures are actually achievable in the real world! Never owned a Subaru before but have been really impressed since we got it.

No worries - it's your money at the end of the day.

I have only ever driven 2 4x4s in my time.

1st is the inlaw's Toyota pickup, sturdy but agricultural.

2nd was a VW Tiguan that I had as a work hire car for a week. I quite liked it, typical soft-roader in that it was a part time 4x4, with the rears only engaged if the fronts slip.

That said it was very comfy and good to drive, as it was basically a Golf. The vw 4x4 system (haldex?) does have the advantage in that mpg is better than a full 4x4 as you're not always turning the full drive train.

It had the auto DSG box which I personally really like.

Maybe consider a Freelander 2, especially MY 13 onwards in HSE spec. I bought one of the last in 2015 and love it.

Kuga with the 4x4 and powershift set up is basically the same principle as the Tiguan then and, whilst ive not experienced the DGS at all, the powershift (used in full auto mode) was like nothing ive ever experienced before. the ONLY auto ive experienced that 'changed gear' as smoothly was a CVT!!!!!

The only problem with Powershift (or any DSG style dry plate gearbox) is low speed maneuvering such as reversing a caravan or hill starts when towing will kill the clutches and they are expensive to replace. For towing a traditional torque convertor auto is vastly superior.

We've had a Tiguan for a bit over 4 years now and find it comfortable and quiet with pretty good build quality. The boot space is limited with the rear seat up and the boot floor is not level when the rear seat is down as the seat back sits on top of the squab so it slopes from front to rear. It drives well on both paved and dirt roads but I haven't tried on any serious off-road work. The 2l diesel performs well and is quite economical for a 4x4 giving around 5.4 to 5.6l/100km on a regular run I do where I get 5.3l/100km with the B Class. A major disadvantage here is that the spare tyre is a spacesaver and not full size, as often we cannot access tyre service within the safe range of a spacesaver. A good selling point for anybody using a Tiguan a lot on dirt roads is that the ESP can be switched off, so you don't have it behaving unpredictably on loose dirt where traction varies a lot.

We hired a Toyota HI-Lux 4x4 ute based camper last year and used it on some of the roughest country in outback Australia (for those interested, drove up the Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys in Western Australia from Derby to Kununurra). It was tough and reliable, didn't miss a beat in 2 weeks, but you could never call it comfortable or quiet and the ride was pretty rough, as you would expect from a workhorse - made a Land Rover feel like a limousine. Could only recommend it for a tradesman in rough and rugged country. Our son and family did the trip with us in a newish (then) Toyota Prado, had no problems towing a camper trailer and was much more civilised than the Hi-Lux.

Drove Kia for a week , hated everything about it , then drove a asx 2.2 great driving 4x4 with the option of swith to 4wheel drive or stay in Eco mode .was very surprised how much I grew to like it .
Would advise a drive in one .

I tried a Hyundai Santa Fe before I bought the XC90, it was very very good and amazing value- the only thing against it was a very poor access to the third row seats/awful really- the XC90 was much more expensive but had the advantage of the third row being excellent and also better kitted out

seems like sorento gdi2,2.4 engines up to 2014 are prone to total engine failure ,and are subject to various class actions with kia, shame quite liked the look of that dont know if ALL engines that go in sorento are effected, however lots of complaints about kia acceptance of liability in like events especially after 1st owner.think i will give that one up.
