I work in the trade for another franchise.
I suspect that the vehicle was being built in the factory, or built and sat at the docks waiting on transport to the UK. These vehicles are shown as 'stock' to the dealership, as the manufacturer invoices the dealership for the vehicle as soon as practical, whether the vehicle is physically delivered to site or not. Therefore the sales person would see the vehicle as stock, when it wasn't actually on site. he should have known where to check the location of the vehicle was though - no excuses.
Probably not as suspicious as you may think, just an error which they should apologise for and put right.
