E270 CDI 2003
Hi
I've just purchased this old bus ... in very good condition though and 80,000 miles 'only'.
I'll be giving it a full service including a change of gearbox oil.
I have 10 litres of unused ATF from my previous BMW ownership days, sitting in my garage.
Spec is 'ATF 1375.4 Lifeguard 6'.
Can I use this in the E270 gearbox?
I know it specifies 236.14 (whatever that means?) for the Merc but I am assuming that as the Lifeguard 6 is a high spec ATF oil, it should be suitable as its a superior spec (and cost!) to 236.14 so I don't wish to waste it if at all possible

Any guidance appreciated.

I wouldn't use it. Its not worth using it and risking damage.

As above , use 236.14 spec . Sell the other on eBay to offset the cost . I use Fuchs atf4134

Welcome James, nice to see another E270 around Newark,

As the others have said wouldn't use it, you can purchase ATF, seal and everything required for a flush of the gearbox for about £110 from Mercedes Lincoln,

Very funny Wighty ... but you got it wrong way round.
I have the good stuff .. so its a case of using the oil filter as your underpants.
Seriously though, your feedback much appreciated and I'll go with the recommended oil.
I would add that over the last few years I've never heard so much rubbish talked about 'sealed for life' gearboxes and ATF oil since I got my BMW with a ZF6HP box.
Daft comments like, "Don't change the oil, you will do more harm than good!"
and
"You must always use the manufacturers ATF or you will damage the box".
I used Smith and Allen own brand oil, at less than half the cost of the 'real stuff'.
Gearbox was smooth and still going strong after 270,000 miles when engine gave out.
I hope the E270 lasts as long as my BMW did.
Thanks again to all the respondents ... much appreciated.

Glad you saw the funny side . I know what you mean with oil specs , but I personally haven't read on this forum of anyone willing to trial non spec ATF . For the cost of Fuchs ATF that meets the spec of maybe £60 for 8 Liters I wouldn't risk it .
