E63 w212 2014
Hi all!

I’m thinking of buying a 2014 E63 which would be my first expensive car. I’m ok with the purchase price, ive convinced myself that I can stomach the running costs but what I don’t want to do is invest what is a lot of money for me to then find I’m stuck with a large unexpected bill.

So, I have two questions. Are the E63s reasonably bulletproof? And, how big is the risk if I buy one privately without a warranty? I’ve looked at F10 M5s and the general consensus was don’t get into one without a BMW approved warranty as repair costs are eye watering.

Any advice gratefully received and thanks in advance!

Can't comment for certain but check out the price of consumables like brakes, tyres and basic AMG service (even at an indi garage)
Then focus in on those points when veiwing alongside service and maintenance, toys and spec

There could be £2k plus needed within days of buying what is akin to a super car in performance terms.....

Steve, I too have a 2014 and it’s been bulletproof in the near 2 years I’ve had it. That said although I bought it with the remainder of Mercedes warranty (10 months), I renewed Tier 1 at £1054 a year with £250 excess. I’ve renewed again for a second year.
So you could say I’ve potentially thrown away £2084 when nowt has gone wrong....but have peace of mind
Those who have followed my journey with the previous SL500 I had will probably see my logic though!

Thanks fellas. Consumables I’m ok with. I’m expecting £1k+ for brakes every 20k miles or so. And same again for tyres more frequently. It’s the ‘sorry sir, you need a new gearbox. That’ll be £10k please’ type conversations that I fear.

To get an approved MB warranty on a car does it have to have been sourced through MB? Or can it be retrospectively applied? £1054 per annum is about half what BMW are quoting for an M5!

Thanks again!

They're mostly bullet proof mechanically, though there is a documented issue with timing chain rattle from cold due to oil draining back from the top end.

No dealer will acknowledge this but there is a TIPS on it.

It's a simple fix involving fitting 2 non return valves and was only supposed to affect the earlier engines (up to around 2013) though my friendly service manager suggested to me that a few later ones escaped with the fault.

If I were to buy one privately I would A: make sure it has a full dealer history an B: buy a Tier 1 warranty, at least for your first year with it. After a year you'll either have peace of mind or be glad you were covered. :D

safe than sorry pal , a good mate of mine has an M6 with a V10 fitted , he pays a grand a year for the BMW warranty and 4 weeks ago that warranty paid dividends , the bottom end went ! 22k for a new engine on a pallet  , I don't ever think you will have anything so expensive fail on an e63 but the peace of mind is well worth the 20 odd quid a week a warranty will cost you imo

Steve, if it has MB Service history you can apply a Tier 1 to it anytime. I bought mine outwith MB.
If you buy approved used MB you’ll get a warranty anyway. The Tier 1 is really competitive- warranty direct etc were at least twice that, and the Quentin Wilson one 3 x times more!

I doubt the warranty will be needed just keep some money aside as a slush fund, it’s better in your pocket than theirs, the cars are pretty bulletproof.

Ensure it has a comprehensive history and been serviced at the correct intervals.

I always say put £1500 in the bank in case you need it rather than buy a warranty. Its rare that a repair exceeds £1000 and if you don't use it you still have your money.

My thoughts exactly.
