I think that's incorrect, pretty sure its mileage based only for the 9 speed box. Mine has 45,000 miles and had never been done, still working perfectly.
Don't think its cheap either, I'd imagine Mercedes would want £500 at least.
I fitted 4 of them to a Honda CB750 many years ago, I'd oiled them far too liberally, for the next few hundred miles the bike smoked like a 2 stroke, never noticed any benefits either.
If he's going by the Mercedes Me app it's notorious for saying the battery is partially charged or worse when there's nothing wrong with it.
He needs to check the voltage himself and not rely on the app.
The tyre manager at Costco proudly told me they all had certificates from Michelin training courses they'd all passed. Then told me all the coloured lines and dots on the tyres had no meaning whatsoever!
Just get it remapped with an Adblue delete, the system will continually give problems that cost a fortune to fix.
I remapped mine after twice paying close to £1700 on repairs 2 years ago, not had a fault with the car since.
