Just a wee line which may help someone out there.
Just replaced coolant in car, replaced thermostat at same time-preventive maintenance.
Topped up as normal-and discovered tiny leak in thermostst cover---it was cracked...drip drip drip.
This is why the vehicle has required regular top ups of coolant for the past year or so. Coolant level is static since replacing the cover and thermostat seal.
Quick easy job

Snap, mine was the same, they are only made out of plastic or something, and one of the bolts had been done up too tight causing a hairline crack.

mine was losing water due to running hot in traffic/idling conditions and fault lay with a faulty 3 pin cooling fan switch which i replaced . also replaced the antifreeze in correct propotion with distilled water and no more water loss or topping up required.
Also did check the thermostat-opened plastic cover-noted o-ring seal and original WAHLER brand thermostat in place-tried to free it but it was stuck tight so left it alone and replaced cover.-NO PROBLEMS SINCE.
