Chaps....would be VERY grateful for some input into this one!

I've recently bought my first Merc, a 1994 C180. It is in beautiful condition, I am very proud of it, but i have got a problem that needs sorting out.

It is the most infuriating type of problem, in that it only happens when nobody else is in the car!!!
Basically, it runs perfectly 99% of the time, but when it is in a mood, if i do something requiring a high fuel flow (overtaking, taking of rapidly from a junction etc), it accelerates for about 2 seconds, then refuses to go any faster at all.
It never runs rough, backfires, stops AT ALL.  It just wont accelerate.
I've found through experimentation, i can cure it by swerving from side to side , or braking harshly a couple of times, which leads me to believe that there maybe some crap in the tank(?).
I've already changed the fuel filter, to no avail.
Also, it did it a couple of days back, when i only had 1/3 of a tank of fuel in, i stopped and filled up, and this totally cured it for about an hour, when it happened again.....i shook the car about, and that also cured it!

Please help me!!......any suggestions gratefully accepted

I've had similar symptoms on my 190E. I tried the filter too, but it turned out to be the fuel pump.

I may be wrong, but like you say, it sounds like a bit of crap in the fuel system somewhere. It might be worth trying out a bottle of Redex fuel/injector cleaner at your next fill up. One of the more experienced on here may say that this kind of thing isnt recommended, if thats the case then so be it, but it may be worth a try. Pop to Halfords and have a look, they usually have loads of that sort of thing in.

Our 1994 C180 had a similar problem where it would not rev above 4000 rpm. In fact, it felt as though the throttle pedal was "pushing back" when depressed.

It was found to have a leak in the inlet manifold (Although it had just undergone a 36 000 mile service and PDI!!!!)
