Help! Our 1996 Mercedes SLK 2298 cc won't start. The ignition turns on OK. But when I turn the key to crank nothing. If I apply 12V to the starter solenoid the starter cranks and engages but engine will not start.

Tried turning the key a few times and then it started. Off and on again OK. But then engine cut out while running and now will not start again. There is no OBDI connector by the bonnet release, just a blanking plate where it should be. On the dash there is a spanner with -663 d as a code.

Any clues? Thanks

Sounds like a K40 module fault to me. The thing in the dash display is an overdue service warning

I don't think there will be an OBD socket in your car - too early as not compulsory until 2001. You will have a round 38 pin diagnostic socket. Usually under the bonnet near the bulkhead.

Does the cluster light up as normal when you turn the key.

Mine does something similar, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't. I've wiggled the connectors where the module is and still the same..it's annoyingly unpredictable. Cars never even really been wet in the last decade for anything to create a bad connection- unless the damp's getting in while in the garage?!

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Yes, the dash lights do light up as normal. I've checked the fuses all OK. I've also hooked out the K40 board and yes there were dry joints especially in top left corner looking at it. Re soldered and put back in. Just the same.

I used a Snapon Analyser on the 38 pin connector just by the K40 board and it did not show any codes. However, after I had used it , I could hear the cooling fan under the ECU kicking in, and the car started and ran! off and on again an then it started but konked out. Would not start again.

When it does not start, the cooling fan under the ECU does not kick in but after a few seconds the Radiator Cooling Fan starts and gradually increases to maximum.

Any more pointers!

Thanks
