Calum, you need to get over your badge snobbery. Last year got a Mazda 3 for my cousins son to learn to drive in. £700, 225,000 miles when bought. Runs like a dream, good gas mileage and very low running costs. Passed its recent MoT with no advisories. The secret? It gets used.

2004 Clio w 80,000 miles. £250 on ebay.

Has needed a service and an airbag sensor (£15), in the year and half I have had it. Ideal vehicle.

Every now and then one of these posts pop, up they ramble on, people make helpful suggestions.

I on the other hand feel the need to buy a piece of string.

Or perhaps a chocolate tea pot.

I too wonder why there is so much 'intercourse' with this guy. He clearly has no intention of taking any advice we give on board. Just seems to be a never ending wind up !. Don't know why we get so involved

It's not badge snobbery with Calum, he genuinely likes older cars. This must be one of the newest cars he has suggested.

Even nice guys get tired of banging heads against walls if only because it spoils the wall.

I quite like looking at older cars, reliving my youth vicariously.

Calum you should get a Marina 1.8TC. Now they are AWESOME. Preferably in classic 70s puke yellow please.

With the black vinyl roof?

Ooh there was a Scimitar in the works car park last week, electric blue with a black vinyl roof. Looked like an auto shift too.

I failed my first driving test back in the 70s driving mum's Escort 1300. It was not a very flexible engine and meant you could only just get it in top at 30mph but drop to 28 and it would judder easing away... so in town I was constant going from 3rd to 4th and back again. Use of gears was a failure point. Next test mum had "upgraded to a Marina 1.8 estate (in nappy poo mustard/brown) which would pull down to 20mph in top. Made much smoother progress in that and I credit it with part of my pass.

id say that was true BUT I feel that he needs to be prepared for the possibilities of such a car being a money pit! and I hate to say it, but something like his Astra has less chance of being a money pit. why? theres no electrics to fail (or not to speak of) on the Astra. auto box controlled by valves, kickdown either by a cable or a vacuum unit (I forget what they had), depending on spec it MIGHT have central locking and/or electric front windows. that's IT. no electric fuel pump, no ECU, no fuel injection (or unlikely on an Astra of that era that wasn't SRi or GTE spec)
the beemer, on the other hand......where do I start?

myself, id look for a nice mk2 Granada........

Yep - straight out of an MGB.

They should've stuck the V8 in a Marina, now that would have been interesting. And possibly deadly.

Turbopete is right though. High-end cars tend to be more complex which is fine when they are new but when all the electrics are failing as it's 17 years old you could spend thousands.

I mean look at the w204, with the ESL issue that's 500 quid a pop for an electronic steering lock.

I seem to recall a V8 Marina Coupe that floated around the Pukekohe motorsport scene....

I have owned an Allegro with the quartic steering wheel, it was beautifully set in a tan vinyl interior with brushed nylon seats.
I know, its showing off a bit but I was flush at the time and the tank was often half full of petrol.
It did have the fake fur seat covers and carried me round in some style.

no wonder BL went bust, with all those gems on sale in the 70s!!!!

the only 2 vehicles IMO they ever made that were worth having (in that era) are probably the 2 that were built for the longest production run. Land Rover (series/defender) and PROPER mini (I'm not a huge fan, but can understand the appeal of them)
