2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
Original VW Beetle, them were the days.
Flat four air cooled petrol that sounded like a diesel.
Top speed of 88mph, eventually.
28mpg.
Cabin heater that put yer t'sleep behind the wheel, cos the exhaust inner skin would have rotted through so exhaust was pumped into the cabin.
A radio if yer were lucky, would crackle like eck, but it didn't matter as yer couldn't hear it over the engine anyway.
In winter there was as much ice on inside of the screen as outside.
A passion wagon that would do yer back in.

There was a trend a while back to name kids after where they were conceived, would've been a bit unkind to call the eldest Beetle though.

I did wonder if there was a car called Pete, with a turbo of course.

I was conceived the night man landed on the moon apparently, so it's lucky I'm not called Saturn V.

I have owned an Allegro with the quartic steering wheel, it was beautifully set in a tan vinyl interior with brushed nylon seats.
I know, its showing off a bit but I was flush at the time and the tank was often half full of petrol.
It did have the fake fur seat covers and carried me round in some style.

Had an Allegro and an Austin Maxi, the Maxi was by far the worse car with the cables changing gears like mixing porridge.

Truly awful cars but then some of my choices have been questionable.

One of the mixed pleasures of getting older is the cars you loved and hated are now "classics" people actually restore Aggro's and marina's !!!!
I have had the prestige end of cars as I got the funds and some of those are rightly treasured and worth fortunes but with what mindset do you spend years restoring the allegro ?
My youth would like a few of my better choices again and so would I.
I would rather restore a washing machine than an aggro.

Lot of "Love" (or perhaps not) for the Allegro. What about THIS ONE currently for sale? :) (Retro fitted Quartic though)

Only thing i had to buy for my bm was a radiator .I ran it for 5 years back in 2000 it was a 1990 model one of the best cars i have owned ..Only 2 cars in front of it -- the Saab and my W123 merc .As for the Rover SD1 apart from speed with the nice V8 engine , it was nothing but a load of junk .I even had rust holes come in the gutters on the edge of the roof .The best one of the Rovers was the P6 with the v8 engine. But those to had bad bodywork ,but easy to fix as all the panels are just bolt on .Fited 4 new wings to the P6 . Sprayed them one at a time, in the spare room .Made a cracking job of them .And the bedroom walls lol .All turned out blue ,along with my beard, tash , and nose hair .It took a lot of work to get back n the good books after this . Also a papering job in that room to settle things .

£239.95 seems about right !

I think you mean £23.95!!!!

seriously, there were still a LOT of these around when I bought my first car (a metro, but we all have to start somewhere and a Fiesta was out of my budget, at the time) and even THEN you would have been hard pushed to GIVE me one!!

In our young days (late 70s) we had 5 of those over a few years inc an exceptional manual 3500S. Also two 2000 P6 models but they were less fun.

Here's three of them... IMG_0028.jpg IMG_0030.jpg IMG_0032.jpg

Looking at the cars I had in the late 80s/early 90s, which were usually a good decade or more old when I got my hands on, I think today's young kids would have a heart attack trying to drive them.

Power steering? Er, no son. Get used to spinning that fecking steering wheel constantly, it's about 9 million turns lock to lock.
ABS? Er, no son, you'll actually need to think about it when you brake.
Stopping distances? Well, eventually.
Cornering ability? Not so much.
Reliability? None, whatsoever.

That said, I will always remember my early cars with fondness, not for what they were but for what they represented.

>>>the Saab

Wonder which Saab you had? I ran a couple of 900s and one amazing limited edition 99 2dr turbo... for its time it had one of the best top gear pulls of any car on the road. When in our 20s we owned many cars that are now thought of as classics but probably if I could have one back on the drive now it would be that 99 Turbo. Saab 99 cottage.jpg

Had one of those in the same colour as your first shot, thought it was a great car back then. Before the V8 I had a TC in the Dark Green which back then I also thought was a great car. Good posers cars both of them !! :)

That yellow one is the same as my Dad had in the early 70s. I'd happily maintain and potter around in a V8 P6 come retirement time.

The yellow one was nice being the later type with broad pleated leather and the only one we had with PAS. I bought it as a light crashed car for £275 having to replace bonnet, screen, grille plus n/s lights & front wing. Found a bonnet in the right colour but had to spray the wing myself which now I've said you can probably see.

Pic 2 (the muddy beige one) was the first we had. Bought with the common worn cam lobe problem and was running on about half power. I fitted a new cam and well remember the first drive through town with the oozing power of that V8 through its 3-spd auto. Wonderful and one of a handful of significant motoring experiences.
