Recently the engine management orange warning lamp appeared on my dash and the car suffered an immediate loss of power. My local garage diagnosed a coil pack problem and replaced this to no effect.

Their diagnostics suggested that the cyclinder bank 1,3 & 5 was showing a misfire and Cat problem. The next course of action was to replace plug leads to see if the additional spark would cure the problem...it hasn't.

The next suggested step is to replace the Cat for that bank of cylinders, not cheap, with no guarantee that this will cure the problem either.

Has anyone on this forum experienced a similar issue and had it resolved?

Many thanks

Steve

At this stage un plug the MAF sensor at the ear of the engine and try the car, most of these will run better with it unplugged if it is faulty.

Yes seen blocked cats on one side, take for a run and compare exhaust temp from side to side.

Given that you have misfires on both banks I would look at a maf as a suspect as Malcolm suggested.
Failing this, the fact you have misfires on both banks of the V would indicate a fuel pressure issue, extreme air leak, or maybe even a breathing issue where oil is recirculating back into the cylinders at load.
A good specialist merc guy will be able to help you ;)

It's a misfire on just one bank

Sorry if I wasn't clear, it's actually a misfire on just one bank of cylinders.

Many thanks, I'll mention this to my garage and see if this is something we should check before sticking a new Cat on.

if its misfiring on cylinders 1, 3 & 5, then its misfiring on BOTH banks. IIRC the bank on the drivers side of the car (on a RHD car) are cylinders 1, 2 & 3, the other (passengers side) bank are 4, 5 & 6.

It will still cost nothing to unplug the MAF and try it, it will do no harm

If the misfires are on one bank no matter what cyls someone has called them, then you should be looking for something that would only affect that bank.

I do agree Ian, I do not know the firing order, I can look it up.
