I currently own a 2002 Mercedes ML 270cdi 197,000 miles on the clock. Love this car but now starting to look at what to go for next. Fuel and Tax are of interest. but do not think I can get away from the £490 tax so what is the fuel mpg like for the 320 cdi keep seeing on Autotrader 35 -39mpg extra urban but feel I may be falling into the trap that Autotrader only use latest figures and not real figures for the age of car. Any one out there own one and can give me some more detailed MPG for the 320 cdi, 350 cdi or 280cdi. Many thanks Paul

The old man has the later ML350cdi which has higher MPG figures than the 320cdi.

It does around 21/22mpg round town, averaged 25 over the last 20k miles and can just about break 30 on a run.

The 280 is slightly worse.

I use it a lot, I would say it is approx. 20% worse than my 2002 ML270cdi in every type of driving for economy.

We also have an X3, it is only a 20d xDrive, but it has a tuning box and is quicker then the ML350, but returns 42mpg round town and 55mpg on a run without trying too hard.

If you want economy look at a later ML250, you will see around 35 average from what I can work out.

You do realise extra urban is a figure cruising at 33mpg for 4 miles in a car already up to ideal temperature and in perfect ambient temperatures?
You need to look at the urban figure in big heavy cars to get an idea of your average if you do 50:50 motorway and city.

Autotrader has the 2007 ML320cdi as...

Urban mpg 22.2 mpg
Average mpg 30.1 mpg

I would say if you consider the average to be motorway cruising (gently) they are about right.

They have my X3 as...

Urban mpg 46.3 mpg
Average mpg 50.4 mpg

Again, pretty close to be fair.
