Missus wants to change her Yaris for something with 5 doors.

Looking at all her wants a Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost 125 titanium or titanium x fits the bill. We could likely afford a 2014/2015 low mileage example.

Anyone had any experience with these?

A friend of mine has one of the very same model albeit a '66'. He loves it but he is not n any way a car man. I personally would be a bit wary of 3 potters, perhaps unnecessarily so

Don't see why - I've had 2 now over the years and both have been fine if a bit noisy.
That said the noise is very addictive so not that bad!

Daihatsu have done 3 cylinder engines since the 80s and Mercedes since the early 00s

I drove a Focus with the same engine, hire car, and I was sceptical too but the engine was a good one.

Wow would hate to lose 5 cylinders, would be like going back to a moped

On a more serious note my Mother drives an 09 plate 1.4 titanium fiesta very well appointed.

The 1.0 engine is a marvel IMO. £0 road tax too.

My wife has the Fiesta Ecoboost and loves it. The engine is great - just don't go for the 1.2 85ps version, make sure its a 100ps or 125ps.

Best selling car in the country.

Better on the M'way than I was expecting also. Cruises along nicely at around the speed limit.

Cheap to fix if they do go wrong. £0 RFL as mentioned above.

What's not to like for a small economical motor?

Notice in the Scotsman Motoring Section today that somebody is taking on Ford because of the number of catastrophic failures of these engines, some failing at motorway speeds in the outside lane. It seems that replacement costs can be in the region of £8000 and Ford don't always want to play ball. However, like everything else, there are 2 sides to every story...

No longer own a Mercedes Benz
A work colleague had the same 1.0 3 pot engine in a Focus and it felt underpowered but this may be due to the additional weight of the Focus or poor driver anticipation of the need to build up speed and read the road ahead. Personally I wouldn't want my other half in a vehicle which requires so much forethought....perhaps more telling of my Wife's driving than a criticism of the car/engine :)

There are different output options for both the fiesta & focus ecoboost engines. Focus has 125, 140 & 150 ps.

New Focus is out in a couple of months.

Look at a corsa over the fiesta, when we bought the 169 we looked at pretty much every small car with 5 doors around and the corsa was much more solid compared to the fiesta, I was very surprised at hw good it really was

Reading the road ahead takes an insight into other drivers likely course of actions that has always been beyond me as they regularly confuse.

My everyday car is a 2015 Focus 1.0 and sports a 123bhp 3 pot Ecoboost engine. I have owned it for nearly two years and have had no problems with it during the 15,000 miles of motorway and town driving. One needs to use all the 6 gears to get the best performance with a fuel consumption in the region of 55 mpg motorway driving and 40 mpg town driving.

The new (2018+) Focus has a petrol engine of 1.5 litres where the middle cylinder cuts out under light cruising/over-run using just two of its three cylinders. Great engineering.
