Hello

I have a 2013 E250 coupe - facelift model.

In the last week my car has developed a whining noise when i accelerate. It only seems to do it when i am around 2000rpm and above, it fades away when i slow down. It doesn't do it when i am parked.

Would anyone have any ideas?? I'll try and post a vid/audio clip.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/h60v8uletupzn4h/E250 audio whining.mp3?dl=0

Thanks for looking

So the noise comes from the front/engine bay some where, sounds more middle but its hard to tell. It also only seems to happen when you go past a certain point on the accelerator pedal and it does it when the cruise control speeds up as well, but only when you accelerate.

Sorry couldn't download the clip which is odd, I use Dropbox all the time!
The description sounds like you may have a small split in a turbo hose/pipe somewhere....

When you say it doesn't do it when you park , do you mean when you Rev the engine when stationary it doesn't do it ? Because I would have thought if it was turbo related it would still make the noise when stationary ??

yeah, when parked it doesn't make the noise at all, only when i am driving, ie in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Looking around some people mentioned transmission fluid, would this cause it?

Seems to play ok via dropbox, not too sure there. Would plugging the car in to a computer tell me if it was a hose or something? There are no error codes that pop on the car though.

But are you revving it when parked? As Wighty says if it is turbo it will do it when the revs increase..

If its boost related it may not do it when revved stationary as there is insufficient load to get the turbo to provide useful boost. A split hose for example may not show if its a pin hole or small split that only opens under boost.
I'd be going for a split/leaking hose on the pressure side of the turbo somewhere.

How many miles does the car have on it?

If i sit there and rev it while its in P then the noise doesn't happen, only when i am driving and have it 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Its done 29,995 or something like that.

Does it do it worse when under load? Is the noise still present when you lift off the throttle?

So if you mean accelerate hard, then yes. When i lift off it will die down or slowly go away.

I found if i accelerate slowly and cruise around 50 then the noise wasn't there, i think the revs were about 1500.

Ok so the noise is load related not rpm related.
Again - split or leaking hose is a possibility and the first to check.
Other possibilities are (in order of cost):
1. Loose exhaust manifold bolts.
2. Holed/split intercooler.
3. Failing turbo

Always start with the cheapest things first. My money's still on a leaking pipe.

You'll need to check them all - they are the big fat ones that go from turbo to intercooler to engine intake.
A split can be hard to find especially if its small.

well that wasn't too hard to find, i should of looked to start with!

Is it worth getting a better turbo pipe seeing as they told me 1100 have been replaced since the start of the year?

Hi, can I ask what pipe you’d recommend buying? Or if there’s an OEM number? Mine has blown in exactly the same place.

Common fault. Just replace with the same one from mb. It's age related rather than mileage

Presume I have to take the part off in order to identify the part number? I can’t find a part diagram on line. I’d prefer to remove and replace at the same time, as I have to take the bottom cover off
